Surf in North Devon

This stretch of coast is officially world-class. In March 2022, North Devon was formally recognised as the 12th World Surfing Reserve, joining iconic locations such as Santa Cruz in California and Australia’s Gold Coast. A high density of outstanding surf and variety of waves for all abilities makes this part of the SW660 route a must-visit.

North Devon Surfing Reserve

Local surfer Adam Hall says it’s hard to beat – and he would know. Adam was involved with putting together the application for North Devon to become a World Surfing Reserve and now helps the community-led organisation protect local breaks and their surf ecosystems. So where does he surf?

‘In general terms, Saunton Sands (route 11) is a really good choice for nice, easy, mellow waves, if it’s not too windy. It’s a good start.

‘Croyde (route 11) is for more experienced surfers who know what they’re doing. It’s a bit like ski runs, you’ve got you blacks, your blues, your greens. Croyde would aways be a black run. It’s good for more experienced or performance surfers because it’s generally bigger, faster and more powerful.

‘If it’s windy, you can go and hide away a bit at Putsborough (route 11). It’s a beautiful spot because you’ve got the Baggy Point headland which takes the sting out of the wind and swell.’

Adam says Woolacombe is well set-up. ‘It’s probably the biggest beach town in North Devon so there are loads of facilities.’ he says. ‘It’s a good all-rounder for beginners and intermediates.’

Croyde and Woolacombe are lifeguarded during the warmer season.

Surf in Cornwall

There are so many places to surf in Cornwall. That’s why surfer Martin Dorey moved to the county 30 years ago. The writer and environmental activist is the founder of The 2 Minute Foundation, a charity that encourages people to pick up beach litter. Martin has also written a series of books about travelling in his campervan. Martin reckons his home surf around Bude (route 10) takes some beating.

‘Bude is easy because it’s got two great beaches – Crookletsand Summerleze. Grab a coffee at Wild Spirits Wellness Café, run by a surfer and a yoga teacher. And the Electric Bakery is a really great place to get breakfast.

‘Back down the coast in Cornwall, you’ve got Newquay (route 9), of course, which is world famous. Watergate Bay is great for beginners, and then you’ve got Great Western and Fistral which are really popular. There are plenty of groovy cafes in and around town. Just around the corner from the Temple of Fringe Surf Shop is Kook, a juice bar run by a husband-and-wife team.

‘Going down the coast, you’ve got Perranporth (route 9), which is a huge beach with a great pub and live music bar, called The Watering Hole. They have loads of high-profile gigs there in the summer.’

Farther around is Whitsand Bay (route 6), which stretches from Rame Head to Portwrinkle. Be aware, however, that access to Whitsand is via steep cliff paths from the car parks at either end.

Martin Dorey’s latest book, Take the Slow Road: England and Wales, is about inspirational journeys around England and Wales by camper van and motorhome, including the South West 660.

WHERE TO STAY

Fistral Beach Hotel and Spa puts you right in the centre of the action. Between April and October, they offer two-night surf and stay packages, which includes a surf lesson.

Just a few sandy steps from Bude’s Crooklets Beach is Tommy Jacks. The tastefully done hotel rooms and apartments here are bright and spacious. Secure surfboard storage and a post-surf shower room are also available.

Surf in Dorset

Dorset might not have the deeply ingrained surf culture of Cornwall and North Devon, but it’s certainly making some waves, if you time it right. The county’s natural offshore reef means that the swell can form well. It’s a good place to dip your toe in if you’re a beginner.

Kimmeridge Bay (route 1) has consistent surf in the winter months and works best in offshore winds from the north. Note: the beach shares a border with a military firing range, so look out for the red flag.

Good times and good waves roll into Bowleaze Cove (route 1)when conditions are right.

Charmouth Beach (route 2) usually known for its fossil-rich cliffs and sandy shores, also attracts surfers throughout the year.

WHERE TO STAY

The Scott Arms is a pub with rooms and views over the Purbeck countryside. B&B accommodation includes double rooms. Breakfast includes locally sourced ingredients.

Lyme Regis is a good base for this stretch of coast. The Rock Point Inn is right by the town’s famous harbour. Settle into a stylish room overlooking the quayside.

TOP TIPS:

During the winter months, there are no lifeguards. This time of year is best left to the people who have surfed before and have the right kit for the cold water.

Scour the conditions. Check the local webcams before you figure out where you’re going to go.

Wearing a good-quality wetsuit is essential to keep warm and comfortable. Most surf schools provide them as part of their packages.

Understanding surf etiquette is crucial, especially in crowded lineups.

Beginners should follow basic rules, such as not dropping in on someone else’s wave and avoid collisions.

Understand rip currents – one of the biggest hazards for surfers and swimmers alike. If caught out, don’t panic. Swim parallel to the shore until you escape the current, then paddle back to safety.

Sidmouth

Sit and stay in Plymouth (Route 5)

Urban hounds who need their regular puppucino can get their fix in Britain’s Ocean City before a waterside or woods walk. That’s the great thing about Plymouth: it’s got all the benefits of city life, plus the coast and countryside are just a stick’s throw away. A stroll along the famous Hoe is a must. The views out to sea are incredible. Down on Plymouth’s historic Barbican, you can catch the distinctive yellow ferry across to Mount Batten for an interesting beach walk. You won’t be able to miss the 30ft Mount Batten artillery tower, built in 1652 as part of the area’s coastal defences.

Scramble up a tor on Dartmoor

Outside the city centre, there’s a choice of nature-filled routes in Plymbridge Woods, including a gentle circular that runs beside the river Plym. Dartmoor National Park isn’t far away. Park and stride around Burrator Reservoir for a decent dose of granite tors, streams and open moor – all of Dartmoor’s best bits.

Where to stay: Enjoy some five-star glamour at Boringdon Hall Hotel. The team here will treat your best friend like royalty. Blankets, dog beds and treats are on offer on arrival. There’s even a dog menu available. Your pet can dine with you in the Grenville room or the Mayflower Brasserie.

Fun in Falmouth (Route 7)

Off-season is a great time to visit Falmouth with the dog in tow. You’ll have the run of the beaches – Gyllyngvase, Swanpool and Maenporth – which are strictly off-limits in the summer months. When you’re done splashing about, take a wander up to Pendennis Castle, Henry VIII’s coastal fortress. Dogs on leads are welcome at the English Heritage-run site. Other nearby attractions to explore include the magical Trebah Garden (complete with private beach) and the National Trust’s Trelissick estate. Lots of woodland, winding paths and river shoreline make this a doggy paradise.

Where to stay: The Falmouth Hotel has a selection of dog-friendly rooms, for a small charge. Pets can also join owners in the newly renovated 1865 Lounge.

Dog beds can be provided for certain rooms at Budock Vean Hotel and Spa, in Mawnan Smith, plus there’s a woodland exercise area for off-lead walks.

Have a ball (throw) in St Ives (Route 8)

Make the most of the popular town’s world-class beaches before the crowds arrive and the dog restrictions come in (May to September). Porthminster, Porthmeor and Carbis Bay beaches are the stuff of dreams: soft golden sand, turquoise seas and easy access to coffee and cakes. The gentle two-mile stroll between St Ives and Carbis Bay along the coast is worth doing for the views. And if you don’t fancy the walk back, you and the dog can hop on the train.

Where to stay: Locations don’t get much better than Pedn Olva, which sits on the rocks above Porthminster beach and St Ives Harbour. There are some specially selected dog-friendly rooms (for a small charge). Furry guests are welcomed with a hamper, which includes a tennis ball, treats and even a can of pup-friendly beer.

Paws in Penzance (Route 8)

The ruff’ n ready coastline of this most westerly of towns is ideal for blowing away the cobwebs. Choose from a selection of routes that take in the clifftops and moorland of Land’s End, part of the West Penwith National Landscape. The three-mile stretch between here and Sennen Cove is a good for wildlife watching. Look out for guillemots and kittiwakes. For a more genteel stroll, park in Penzance rail and bus station car park and head along the seafront towards Marazion. The route takes in Long Rock beach, ideal for a ball chuck and views of the famous St Michael’s Mount. Marazion is a creative little town with a thriving arts scene. Dogs are welcome to join you for a browse in the Summerhouse Gallery before you retrace your steps to Penzance, or else bus it back.

Where to stay: The Old Coastguard in Mousehole doesn’t charge for pets. Dogs can stay in the rooms, providing they don’t sleep on the beds. There’s also a designated K9 station, well equipped with bedtime biscuits, old towels, sheets and water bowls.

Discover the dunes in Perranporth (Route 9)

Perranporth is three miles of ‘proper Cornish’ beach, much-loved by families, surfers and dog walkers. Michelle Dickinson, owner of Muddy Paws Cornwall, says it’s definitely one of her favourite places. ‘You can walk dogs on the dunes all year round,’ she says. ‘And if you walk down to the coast from there, you can access part of the beach that’s open to dogs all year.’

Perranporth has a very user-friendly set-up with a car park right next to the sand and toilets, cafes etc within easy reach. Got kids in tow? The rockpools at low tide are especially good. And keep an eye out for clues to Cornwall’s past. Relics of the area’s mining industry can be seen at Droskyn Point on the western side of Perranporth. The area was also used by smugglers in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

Where to stay: The Esplanade Hotel in Newquay welcomes well-behaved pets. They have a choice of dog-friendly rooms, many with outside access for those all-important comfort breaks. Dog beds and bowls are available by request.

Take on the Taw and Torridge Estuary (Route 11)

Lots of pretty places to explore here, as well as big expanses of shoreline to run alongside with the wind in your ears. You’ll be in good company at Instow, a fab little village right on the water. Dog owners from far and wide come to walk the scenic section of the Traka Trail that runs alongside the village. North Devon local Tracy Freame is a volunteer with the Cinnamon Trust, a charity which supports elderly and terminally ill people to look after their pets. Tracy regularly walks collie-cross Prince for his owner and the pair love going to Instow. ‘There’s a lovely four-mile walk there you can do, with lots of bird life to spot along the way,’ says Tracy. ‘The beach is a great place for the dogs to run – and there’s free parking, too!’

Just over the water is Appledore, another charming village with narrow streets, pastel-coloured houses and generally cheerful vibe. A ferry service operates between Appledore and Instow from April to October.

Where to stay: Hire a classic VW Campervan from Freebird Campers. The Bideford-based firm has options for two small or one medium-sized dog to come on board and enjoy the ride. From March 28^th onwards, you can pitch up at Tarka Trail Campsite at Yelland. Well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome.

Explore Exmoor (Route 12)

Bossington is a beautifully preserved National Trust village tucked between Porlock and the Exmoor coast, known for its chocolate‑box charm and gentle, timeless atmosphere. It sits right on the edge of Exmoor National Park, so you get that magical blend of moorland, woodland, and coastline all in one place.

Why not pop to Porlock Marsh where you can enjoy a gentle 3.4 mile loop from Bossington along the paths around Porlock’s fascinating saltmarshes, a coastal wildlife area of national importance, designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest – so please keep dogs under close control. It’s a brilliant, atmospheric place for a wander, especially at low tide when the views open right out. Dogs will love a frolic and sniff along the shingle beach, which is dog friendly all year round.

Section 7: St Austell to Penzance

• 21 November – 3 January: Head to the Heligan Night Garden and become immersed in an enchanting lantern experience, set amidst the atmospheric Lost Gardens. Section 8: Penzance to St Ives

• 11 December to 4 January sees the return of the Mousehole Harbour Lights! The annual Christmas lights that adorn the village of Mousehole, Cornwall.  Started in 1963, the Mousehole Harbour Lights are switched on each December, illuminating the village and harbour. A tradition which started as far back as 1963!

Section 10: Padstow – Clovelly

• On Sunday 30 November, the Christmas Lights are a magical time in Clovelly.  Starting at 4 pm in the afternoon, a local brass band leads the procession down to the harbour, with festive Christmas carols sung along the way.

Section 11: Clovelly – Lynton

• 21 November – 30 December, RHS Glow at Rosemoor, Great Torrington, North Devon. Tall trees, windy paths and lakes make a great setting for illuminations and this year the RHS gardens are promising their longest ever trail with an extended route, dazzling new light features and festive music. Pre-booking essential.

Section 12: Lynton – Watchet

• All through December enjoy Christmas in the Lyn valley, with lights around the historic harbour of Lynmouth, and artisan shopping in the lovely local shops. Switching on ceremony is on Sunday December 1^st at 7pm.

Outdoor Lidos and Pools

Lidos (pronounced lee-doe) were named as such due to their proximity to the sea and derives from an Italian word meaning beach or shore.

Lidos and outdoor pools have faced increasing costs recently due to energy prices so they’re delighted to see you. In return, you get to enjoy glistening clear, warmer water, no over-crowding, good facilities, and even some treats from their serving hatch.

Sea Pools

Sea pools can also face a battering with the ever changing climate and seasons. The joy of a sea pool is that you can give yourself to the ocean but in a more contained and safe feeling space if you will. Some are maintained by local councils and others are left to run wild.

Use it or Lose it

Many, if not all, are cared for and maintained by the local council or community and volunteer run charities, so if you don’t visit and use it, you’ll risk losing it. With all that’s on offer and many of these venues, why wouldn’t you have them on your must visit list?

I have collated a few options along the routes, to chill out in, during your South West 660 road trip. So pack your beach bag essentials, and let’s dive in…

Route 3 – Lyme Regis to Exeter

Topsham Pool, Topsham

Tucked away in the middle of estuary town Topsham, this lovely community-run pool was born out of nearly a decade of hard graft and fundraising back in the 70’s, finally opening in 1979. Topsham Pool is 25m swimming pool, heated to at least 27-28 degrees with plenty of seating, umbrellas, showers, lockers, changing rooms and some vending machines. Booking isn’t available, and queues are a common site for this lovely venue, with people normally being treated to a game of bowls as they wait with Topsham Bowls Club on its doorstep.

Route 4 – Exeter to Dartmouth

Teignmouth Lido, Teignmouth

Situated a stones throw away from Teignmouth beach, this outdoor pool as been brought back to life recently thanks to decarbonaistation investments by the local council, resulting on it being incredibly eco-friendly. The heated 25m outdoor swimming pool has seated area around the edges, vending machines for drinks and snacks and changing rooms with hot showers and toilets.

Shoalstone Sea Pool, Brixham

Shoalstone Pool is a 53 metre sea water swimming pool situated in a stunning position on Brixham seafront and run by a charity. It is built into a natural rock pool that has been popular for bathing since Victorian times, you can relax on one of the sun loungers or deck chairs that are available for hire, or relax on the grass and decking. There is a shower and changing rooms, lifeguards during peak season and independent food and drinks offerings available too. The pool is free but donations are welcome.

Dartmouth Pool, Dartmouth

Situated a mile inland from the River Dart and stunning town of Dartmouth, this charity-run swimming pool is a 25 metre by 8.5 metre outdoor pool and is heated to 28 degrees celsius. With space around the pool’s edge for relaxing, shower and change facilities, lifeguards at the ready, there is also a small but perfectly formed shop selling drinks, snacks and swim accessories. Online booking is available which is great if you want to be sure of as swim slot.

Route 5 – Dartmouth to Plymouth & Route 6 – Plymouth to St Austell

Tinside Lido, Plymouth

Overlooking Plymouth seafront, this semi circular Grade II-listed outdoor salt water swimming pool offers gorgeous surroundings for locals and road trippers to enjoy. At 55 meters in diameter, it features several water features, a glorious sun deck with deck chairs for hire, it’s no wonder this Art Deco pool is appears in the top 10 of Europe’s outdoor pools and is certainly instagrammable. Tinside Lido Café is perfect for grabbing a drink and an ice cream. This pool says it is accessible to anyone with accessibility needs, and is therefore truly open to all.

Route 7 – St Austell to Penzance & Route 8 – Penzance to St Ives

Jubilee Pool, Penzance

Said to be the largest art deco sea water lido and geothermal pool in the country, Jubilee Pool has an envious position overlooking Mounts Bay. Over time it has been restored to its former glory with more modern facilities, whilst retaining its period feel. An interesting pool due to its a triangular shape, it is cocooned by its crisp white walled backdrop and has three options for water lovers.

One corner holds the geothermal pool which requires booking for its hourly slots, were you can be enveloped in its toasty 30 and 35 degrees C waters, a temperature that can be sustained with a very low carbon footprint. The main pool is bookable as well as welcoming walk ins and there’s a learner pool for open for the summer holidays too, with the sea water bathing pools usually a refreshing 1 to 2 degrees above sea temperature. The Jubilee Pool Café serves breakfast, lunch, snacks and drinks using local suppliers and has indoor and outdoor seating.

Route 10 Padstow to Clovelly

Bude Sea Pool, Bude

Bude Sea Pool is a semi natural pool which opened in 1930 as a safe haven for bathers, it is looked after by its passionate charity and a much loved and well used free pool. With the cliffs at the rear providing some shelter, the staggered terrace provides space for sitting or changing whilst the cheerfully coloured beach huts look on.

At approximately 91m long and 45m wide, it is nearly double the length of an Olympic swimming pool and is one of the largest tidal pools of its kind in the UK. As this is a tidal pool, high tide is to be respected and avoided, as well as when the weather is windy and wild but the comings and goings of all types of friendly swimmers seeking the same joy will warm your heart whatever the weather.

Route 11 – Clovelly to Lynton

Westward Ho! Rock Sea Pool, Westward Ho!

Built in the mid to late 1800’s by the Victorians who travelled many miles to the sea at Westward Ho!, this pool is impressively built right in the middle of the rock pools which are great for a ramble at low tide. This is a very natural, no fuss, free offering, so seek facilities, food and drink nearby from local businesses in this lovely seaside town.

Both native to these shores and imports from overseas, that simply love the conditions that this coastal, yet sheltered, valley garden offers. This sub-tropical style garden lets thrive a few special trees and plants that possess an incredible history, and can transport you back to a time when dinosaurs walked the earth…

Wollemi Pines

At the top of the main path that winds its way through the gardens, you will find the Wollemi Pine (Wollemia Nobilis). This is an incredibly special tree as it was thought to be extinct for the last 2 million years. However, in 1994, a group of researchers exploring the Blue Canyons in Australia, stumbled upon a small collection of Wollemi Pines. This location remains secret, to ensure this species stays protected and avoids damage through disease spread. Fossil records for this species suggest that between 100 – 200 million years ago they were present across all of Australia as well as inhabiting the vast majority of forests in Antarctica and New Zealand!

Ancient Tree Ferns

One of the most primitive species found in the gardens is the Australian Tree Fern (Dicksonia Antarctica) which existed long before dinosaurs. This species is so ancient that they were present before flowering or cone bearing plants had evolved. Dating back hundreds of millions of years. They were an essential component of the Carboniferous Period 300 to 360 million years ago. And became the main base of the fossil fuels we use today. They reproduce differently to most plants in our gardens through primitive spores (they do not flower but mature plants produce spores on the underside of the leaves). Through the floor to ceiling windows in Restaurant Meudon you have a front row seat to the first ever tree ferns planted in the garden. Which are now around 200 years old!

Dinner for a Dinosaur?

As you make your way through the gardens, you cannot help but cast your eyes towards a beautiful and unusual plant whose vast, dark green leaves can reach a diameter of two metres! Gunnera (Gunnera Manicata) is often also called ‘Giant Rhubarb’ but it also has a third nickname: Dinosaur Food! This plant loves growing in damp, marshy areas and were thought to be a common food source for dinosaurs. Botanists have determined that the Gunnera family has been around since the Cretaceous period. Due to information revealed by fossilised pollen spores. This plant loves the Cornish climate, and is stunning when fully grown (spring until late summer). It is a must-see (and quite hard to miss!) when you visit Meudon!

If you’ve yet to spend any time in Meudon Gardens it is, as with one or two other valley gardens in the area such as Trebah and Glendurgan, a calming, relaxing and immersive experience. Whether walking off a hearty lunch, heading to Bream Cove for a dip or maybe enjoying the early morning as the sun peeps over the bottom of the gardens and the dawn chorus is in full swing. It is always worthwhile taking your time and being curious as to what you will spot. We can’t promise you’ll come across a dinosaur, but you can see what they might have had for lunch!

This muti-award winning B&B is an adult-only haven which has its own sauna with a fantastic view available, plus a massage treatment option. Massages need to be pre-booked, however, the sauna is ready to go at just 15 minutes notice. And its private use, so just for you and your partner to relax in! There are aromas that you may add, a herb bowl over the heater, bluetooth speakers, and low level warm back lighting.
