Surf’s up on the SW660! Whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned pro, there are lots of opportunities to ride the waves along the way. Here are a few top suggestions to surf along the SW660 route…

Surf in North Devon

This stretch of coast is officially world-class. In March 2022, North Devon was formally recognised as the 12th World Surfing Reserve, joining iconic locations such as Santa Cruz in California and Australia’s Gold Coast. A high density of outstanding surf and variety of waves for all abilities makes this part of the SW660 route a must-visit.

Adam Hall (pic credit: Rachael Hall)

North Devon Surfing Reserve

Local surfer Adam Hall says it’s hard to beat – and he would know. Adam was involved with putting together the application for North Devon to become a World Surfing Reserve and now helps the community-led organisation protect local breaks and their surf ecosystems. So where does he surf?

Saunton Sands beach is a surfers’ paradise (pic credit: Gordon Dryburgh)

‘In general terms, Saunton Sands (route 11) is a really good choice for nice, easy, mellow waves, if it’s not too windy. It’s a good start.

Croyde Beach is for experienced surfers (pic credit: N and M Photography)

‘Croyde (route 11) is for more experienced surfers who know what they’re doing. It’s a bit like ski runs, you’ve got you blacks, your blues, your greens. Croyde would aways be a black run. It’s good for more experienced or performance surfers because it’s generally bigger, faster and more powerful.

‘If it’s windy, you can go and hide away a bit at Putsborough (route 11). It’s a beautiful spot because you’ve got the Baggy Point headland which takes the sting out of the wind and swell.’

Woolacombe has everything a surfer needs (pic credit: Gordon Dryburgh)

Adam says Woolacombe is well set-up. ‘It’s probably the biggest beach town in North Devon so there are loads of facilities.’ he says. ‘It’s a good all-rounder for beginners and intermediates.’

Croyde and Woolacombe are lifeguarded during the warmer season.

WHERE TO STAY

The Collective at Woolsery is a seriously stylish, comfortable base. Choose from a selection of four luxurious rooms and suites above the village shop.

The Carlton Hotel in Ilfracombe is well-positioned to access all of that world-class surf. A friendly team and great food make this a year-round popular choice.

Surf in Cornwall

There are so many places to surf in Cornwall. That’s why surfer Martin Dorey moved to the county 30 years ago. The writer and environmental activist is the founder of The 2 Minute Foundation, a charity that encourages people to pick up beach litter. Martin has also written a series of books about travelling in his campervan. Martin reckons his home surf around Bude (route 10) takes some beating.

‘Bude is easy because it’s got two great beaches – Crookletsand Summerleze. Grab a coffee at Wild Spirits Wellness Café, run by a surfer and a yoga teacher. And the Electric Bakery is a really great place to get breakfast.

‘Back down the coast in Cornwall, you’ve got Newquay (route 9), of course, which is world famous. Watergate Bay is great for beginners, and then you’ve got Great Western and Fistral which are really popular. There are plenty of groovy cafes in and around town. Just around the corner from the Temple of Fringe Surf Shop is Kook, a juice bar run by a husband-and-wife team.

‘Going down the coast, you’ve got Perranporth (route 9), which is a huge beach with a great pub and live music bar, called The Watering Hole. They have loads of high-profile gigs there in the summer.’

Farther around is Whitsand Bay (route 6), which stretches from Rame Head to Portwrinkle. Be aware, however, that access to Whitsand is via steep cliff paths from the car parks at either end.

Martin Dorey’s latest book, Take the Slow Road: England and Wales, is about inspirational journeys around England and Wales by camper van and motorhome, including the South West 660.

WHERE TO STAY

Fistral Beach Hotel and Spa puts you right in the centre of the action. Between April and October, they offer two-night surf and stay packages, which includes a surf lesson.

Just a few sandy steps from Bude’s Crooklets Beach is Tommy Jacks. The tastefully done hotel rooms and apartments here are bright and spacious. Secure surfboard storage and a post-surf shower room are also available.

Surf in Dorset

Dorset might not have the deeply ingrained surf culture of Cornwall and North Devon, but it’s certainly making some waves, if you time it right. The county’s natural offshore reef means that the swell can form well. It’s a good place to dip your toe in if you’re a beginner.

Kimmeridge Bay (route 1) has consistent surf in the winter months and works best in offshore winds from the north. Note: the beach shares a border with a military firing range, so look out for the red flag.

Good times and good waves roll into Bowleaze Cove (route 1)when conditions are right.

Charmouth Beach (route 2) usually known for its fossil-rich cliffs and sandy shores, also attracts surfers throughout the year.

WHERE TO STAY

The Scott Arms is a pub with rooms and views over the Purbeck countryside. B&B accommodation includes double rooms. Breakfast includes locally sourced ingredients.

Lyme Regis is a good base for this stretch of coast. The Rock Point Inn is right by the town’s famous harbour. Settle into a stylish room overlooking the quayside.

TOP TIPS:

During the winter months, there are no lifeguards. This time of year is best left to the people who have surfed before and have the right kit for the cold water.

Scour the conditions. Check the local webcams before you figure out where you’re going to go.

Wearing a good-quality wetsuit is essential to keep warm and comfortable. Most surf schools provide them as part of their packages.

Understanding surf etiquette is crucial, especially in crowded lineups.

Beginners should follow basic rules, such as not dropping in on someone else’s wave and avoid collisions.

Understand rip currents – one of the biggest hazards for surfers and swimmers alike. If caught out, don’t panic. Swim parallel to the shore until you escape the current, then paddle back to safety.

About Rockfish…

Rockfish is a renowned seafood group founded by Mitch Tonks, a celebrated seafood chef and restaurateur who is still very much involved in all aspects of the business. “Tomorrow’s fish are still in the sea” is their tagline, encompassing their commitment to serving seafood that is always fresh and sourced daily.

His passion for sustainable seafood and championing underutilised British species of fish and shellfish have been the driving forces behind Rockfish’s success. Mitch’s vision is to make seafood accessible and enjoyable, while also ensuring that the marine environment is protected for future generations.

Rockfish operates its own fishing boat, Rockfisher, which lands her catch in Brixham (one of the UK’s busiest fishing ports) at dawn. That catch is then prepared at the quayside before being delivered to rockfish restaurants across the South West in time for service.

As you take your seat in one of their waterside venues, your server will talk through the daily selection available, marking each available fish species down on your paper tablecloth daily landings menu and highlighting the different ways their chefs can cook it to order for you – on the chargrill or freshly fried.

Rockfish prides itself on offering fresh, sustainable seafood in picturesque coastal locations. With 11 eateries on Routes 1 to 6, and a 12th being added to the shoal, each restaurant is perfectly positioned to provide waterside views and a unique and casual dining experience, making them a perfect pitstop along the South West 660.

All venues are dog and family friendly so round everyone up and plan that road trip with a reward for your tastebuds and your eyes. Did we mention they offer bottomless chips with your meal at their restaurants and free drinking water at their outdoor taps? Fill your tummy and top up your reusable bottle for the journey ahead.

If you’re too busy road tripping to stop for long, then why not opt for a takeaway? They offer takeaway all year round in Brixham, Dartmouth and Budleigh, season takeaway in Plymouth, and explorers can now enjoy click and collect fish and chips from Rockfish Exeter.

In this partner focused blog, we caught up with Managing Director Emily Harmon, to find out why this is a must-visit stop on route 11.

In the picturesque north Devon village of Woolsery, halfway between Bude and Barnstaple, The Collective is the brainchild of Michael and Xochi Birch. Tech entrepreneurs with deep family connections to the village. It brings together a 150-acre working farm, an award-winning pub, a gourmet fish and chip shop, a charming village store, and a collection of beautifully designed rooms, suites, and cottages. Offering a truly unique combination of rural charm, luxury accommodation, and exceptional local food experiences.

Tell us about The Collective and how it came about?

When Michael found out that the pub in his family’s tiny Devonshire village was struggling, he knew he wanted to help. I was working with him in the US at the time, and he sent me over to the UK to assess the situation – it quickly became clear that the once beautiful Grade-II Listed building had fallen into serious disrepair. After plenty of research we decided to bring in Barnstaple-based Jonathan Rhind Architects. They specialise in the conservation and reuse of historic buildings across the southwest and they have done a fantastic job. Together we carefully restored the pub’s historic features, removed the unsympathetic additions that had accumulated over the years and added our own modern touch with a light-filled dining room extension. Three years later, the ancient coaching inn and blacksmiths had been brought back to life and The Farmers Arms is once again central to village life just as it once was.

From there, the momentum continued. We were approached by the fish and chip shop which we purchased and reopened.

Followed soon after by the village shop – originally owned by Michael’s great, great grandparents. Alongside these we have created a series of beautiful cottages, suites and rooms throughout the village, as well as the farm, which truly sits at the heart of everything we do. Now we’re working on repositioning the old abandoned Georgian manor house as a boutique hotel.

Tell us more about the village store and post office – it’s not your usual village shop is it?

No, it’s not, though if you went back to the 30s or 40s it might feel familiar! Originally built by Michael’s great, great grandparents, the shop holds a special place in his heart. In fact, his grandmother was born in this very building. On the ground floor you’ll find a nostalgic store and post office. It’s really charming, with 1930s/40s aesthetics – black and white tiled floors and lofty wooden shelves. We’ve restored it to what a village shop once was. A place to pick up local meats, fresh vegetables and produce from the surrounding area. There’s a beautiful selection of craft beers, jams, artisan gifts – all things made by small, independent makers. It feels like a true homage to Michael’s family.

On the floors above, we’ve created exquisite hotel rooms and suites. Styled with period details – art deco touches, retro prints and rich fabrics – they offer stunning views and serene, adult-only spaces.

Tell us about the cottages?

We’re thrilled that our range of rooms, suites and cottages hold a prestigious One-Key MICHELIN rating. The cottages are truly beautiful. They’re been carefully restored to retain their quintessentially Devon charm while offering all the modern amenities you’d expect from a luxury stay. Take The Smithy for example, it features a walk-in shower, wood burner, freestanding tub and state-of-the-art kitchen. They cottages are perfect for families, couples and friends looking for comfort, character and a touch of indulgence.

Have you had support from the local community?

In the beginning there were certainly some concerns. But what we’ve achieved in the village is a phased restoration of amenities that serve the community just as much as they serve the visitors. We’ve not just swooped in and pulled back the curtain overnight – instead we’ve restored things gradually and thoughtfully.

One of the challenges really is our location. In many ways it’s ideal – we’re perfectly placed between Bude and Barnstaple and the area offers so much to enjoy. But we’re also a small, remote village, and many people simply don’t know we’re here. This year we won the VisitEngland pub of the year, we’re ranked twenty-seven on the Good Food Guide of pubs and our accommodation is One-Key MICHELIN rated. We’re proud of these accolades and the recognition means so much to us – we want people to discover us!

How do you ensure guests have a memorable experience?

We offer a high-level of attentive, personalised service to our overnight guests. Whether it’s creating a full itinerary or arranging ad-hoc reservations for meals and day trips, we’re always on hand to help – we want everyone to get the most out of their stay. What makes the experience really special is that guests get an agricultural, rural village setting paired with the luxe of MICHELIN-level accommodation and exceptional food.

Do you have a favourite spot in or around the village that you personally love?

That’s a tricky one – the cottages are amazing. The restored village shop and rooms are gorgeous. And the pub is perfect for a cosy dinner. But if there’s one thing that I recommend to everyone, it’s our farm tour. Birch Farm is a 150-acre working farm where we’re blending ancient and modern techniques. Our Head Gardener, Josh Sparkes has been with us four years now. He’s doing some truly special work – from Japanese fermentation composting and biodynamic techniques to traditional methods of growing heritage varieties – it’s utterly fascinating. And what is wonderful is that everything begins and ends at the farm. We’ve put soil health at the centre of our approach, and in turn we’re rearing meat that offers a superior eating experience, enjoyed in the pub.

Is there a particular time of year when this area feels the most magical?

I love this time of year – for me it’s just ‘uber-cosy’ season. I love to lean into how beautiful and romantic everything feels. The pub has multiple fires glowing, the cottages have wood fired stoves. It feels like the perfect time to travel with a stack of books, a good bottle of wine and just enjoy the slower pace. Devon is so often visited in the summer. Long beach days and sightseeing. But here, in autumn and winter, the pace changes. There’s less pressure to rush around, and simply spending a day relaxing, reading, or sitting in the pub playing cards can be just as wonderful, if not more so!

Discover what’s happening across the village. From seasonal dining events to farm tours and special experiences. Be sure to explore the events page and find out what’s coming up next.

Travelling with your best pal? The South West 660 has plenty of dog-friendly pit-stops, gorgeous beaches and trails to explore. Here are a few top places to have a sniff and stretch those legs…

Sit and stay in Plymouth (Route 5)

Urban hounds who need their regular puppucino can get their fix in Britain’s Ocean City before a waterside or woods walk. That’s the great thing about Plymouth: it’s got all the benefits of city life, plus the coast and countryside are just a stick’s throw away. A stroll along the famous Hoe is a must. The views out to sea are incredible. Down on Plymouth’s historic Barbican, you can catch the distinctive yellow ferry across to Mount Batten for an interesting beach walk. You won’t be able to miss the 30ft Mount Batten artillery tower, built in 1652 as part of the area’s coastal defences.

Scramble up a tor on Dartmoor

Outside the city centre, there’s a choice of nature-filled routes in Plymbridge Woods, including a gentle circular that runs beside the river Plym. Dartmoor National Park isn’t far away. Park and stride around Burrator Reservoir for a decent dose of granite tors, streams and open moor – all of Dartmoor’s best bits.

Where to stay: Enjoy some five-star glamour at Boringdon Hall Hotel. The team here will treat your best friend like royalty. Blankets, dog beds and treats are on offer on arrival. There’s even a dog menu available. Your pet can dine with you in the Grenville room or the Mayflower Brasserie.

Fun in Falmouth (Route 7)

Off-season is a great time to visit Falmouth with the dog in tow. You’ll have the run of the beaches – Gyllyngvase, Swanpool and Maenporth – which are strictly off-limits in the summer months. When you’re done splashing about, take a wander up to Pendennis Castle, Henry VIII’s coastal fortress. Dogs on leads are welcome at the English Heritage-run site. Other nearby attractions to explore include the magical Trebah Garden (complete with private beach) and the National Trust’s Trelissick estate. Lots of woodland, winding paths and river shoreline make this a doggy paradise.

Where to stay: The Falmouth Hotel has a selection of dog-friendly rooms, for a small charge. Pets can also join owners in the newly renovated 1865 Lounge.

Dog beds can be provided for certain rooms at Budock Vean Hotel and Spa, in Mawnan Smith, plus there’s a woodland exercise area for off-lead walks.

Have a ball (throw) in St Ives (Route 8)

Make the most of the popular town’s world-class beaches before the crowds arrive and the dog restrictions come in (May to September). Porthminster, Porthmeor and Carbis Bay beaches are the stuff of dreams: soft golden sand, turquoise seas and easy access to coffee and cakes. The gentle two-mile stroll between St Ives and Carbis Bay along the coast is worth doing for the views. And if you don’t fancy the walk back, you and the dog can hop on the train.

Where to stay: Locations don’t get much better than Pedn Olva, which sits on the rocks above Porthminster beach and St Ives Harbour. There are some specially selected dog-friendly rooms (for a small charge). Furry guests are welcomed with a hamper, which includes a tennis ball, treats and even a can of pup-friendly beer.

Paws in Penzance (Route 8)

The ruff’ n ready coastline of this most westerly of towns is ideal for blowing away the cobwebs. Choose from a selection of routes that take in the clifftops and moorland of Land’s End, part of the West Penwith National Landscape. The three-mile stretch between here and Sennen Cove is a good for wildlife watching. Look out for guillemots and kittiwakes. For a more genteel stroll, park in Penzance rail and bus station car park and head along the seafront towards Marazion. The route takes in Long Rock beach, ideal for a ball chuck and views of the famous St Michael’s Mount. Marazion is a creative little town with a thriving arts scene. Dogs are welcome to join you for a browse in the Summerhouse Gallery before you retrace your steps to Penzance, or else bus it back.

Where to stay: The Old Coastguard in Mousehole doesn’t charge for pets. Dogs can stay in the rooms, providing they don’t sleep on the beds. There’s also a designated K9 station, well equipped with bedtime biscuits, old towels, sheets and water bowls.

Discover the dunes in Perranporth (Route 9)

Michelle (and Peanut) from Muddy Paws Cornwall (pic credit: Michelle Dickinson)

Perranporth is three miles of ‘proper Cornish’ beach, much-loved by families, surfers and dog walkers. Michelle Dickinson, owner of Muddy Paws Cornwall, says it’s definitely one of her favourite places. ‘You can walk dogs on the dunes all year round,’ she says. ‘And if you walk down to the coast from there, you can access part of the beach that’s open to dogs all year.’

Perranporth has a very user-friendly set-up with a car park right next to the sand and toilets, cafes etc within easy reach. Got kids in tow? The rockpools at low tide are especially good. And keep an eye out for clues to Cornwall’s past. Relics of the area’s mining industry can be seen at Droskyn Point on the western side of Perranporth. The area was also used by smugglers in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

Where to stay: The Esplanade Hotel in Newquay welcomes well-behaved pets. They have a choice of dog-friendly rooms, many with outside access for those all-important comfort breaks. Dog beds and bowls are available by request.

Take on the Taw and Torridge Estuary (Route 11)

Lots of pretty places to explore here, as well as big expanses of shoreline to run alongside with the wind in your ears. You’ll be in good company at Instow, a fab little village right on the water. Dog owners from far and wide come to walk the scenic section of the Traka Trail that runs alongside the village. North Devon local Tracy Freame is a volunteer with the Cinnamon Trust, a charity which supports elderly and terminally ill people to look after their pets. Tracy regularly walks collie-cross Prince for his owner and the pair love going to Instow. ‘There’s a lovely four-mile walk there you can do, with lots of bird life to spot along the way,’ says Tracy. ‘The beach is a great place for the dogs to run – and there’s free parking, too!’

In England, there are many fantastic places, but Wareham is somewhere that highlights quintessential English life. Placed between River Piddle and River Frome, just 8 miles from Poole, this captivating market town draws visitors each and every year. It has a wealth of stunning views, rich history and breadth of activities.

Today, we’ll be discussing lesser known places for your holiday, taken from locals in the area, so you can avoid the commercial hotspots and enjoy what Wareham is really about.

Looking for somewhere to stay? Take a look at Priory Wareham, the country house hotel centred just next to River Frome. They hold their own events too, which can be found on their events page.

Wareham’s History

Begin your Wareham adventure in the town centre where the ancient Saxon walls are – among the best-preserved in Britain. Built by Alfred the Great in the 9th century as a defence against Viking raids, these monumental walls still encircle the town today. Follow the one-mile Wareham Walls Walk for scenic views and glimpses of Norman castle remnants whilst soaking in 1,000 years of history.

Culture enthusiasts should visit St Martin’s Church to see the striking stone effigy of T.E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) in full Arab dress, whilst the Wareham Town Museum on East Street chronicles the area’s fascinating story from prehistoric times to the present. Film lovers can enjoy The Rex Cinema, Dorset’s oldest running cinema, offering everything from current releases to live-streamed theatre.

Take in the scenery by the Riverside

The picturesque Wareham Quay stands as the heart of the town and one of Dorset’s most photographed spots. This charming riverside location is perfect for leisurely meals, boat watching, or embarking on water adventures. Hire kayaks, canoes, or paddleboards to explore the beautiful River Frome, or take a memorable trip on the Paddle Steamer Monarch – one of only three operational paddle steamers in Britain.

Nature reserves and wildlife

Discover the area’s spectacular landscapes at the tranquil Blue Pool, featuring woodland walks and the UK’s longest rope bridge. Wildlife watchers shouldn’t miss RSPB Arne Nature Reserve, offering breathtaking Poole Harbour views and diverse habitats. Nearby, the evocative ruins of Corfe Castle – partially demolished during the English Civil War in 1646 – provide one of Britain’s most iconic historical sites.

The sun’s mellow glow filters through the turning leaves, the crisp autumn air carries the scent of salt and earth, and the coast beckons with its timeless charm. The picnic’s packed, your favourite company is by your side – what’s missing? Of course, the perfect car. But not just any car.

If you’re setting out to explore the South West 660 this autumn, you want to do it in style. And we believe nothing captures that unique spirit better than hiring a Drive Devon MX-5 convertible.

Based in East Devon near Exeter on Route 3, right off those stunning coastal stretches of Route 3 on the South West 660, Drive Devon invites you to escape the motorway madness and meander Routes 1 to 12.

Visiting from further afield? Imagine stepping off at Exeter station or airport and heading off in your convertible sports car. Load your bags, drop the roof, and you’re off. In no time, you’ll be sipping a warm or cool drink by a serene harbour or wandering through golden-hued lanes, embracing slow travel at its finest.

Here’s your checklist for an unforgettable autumn road trip:

1 – No roof, all charm

To fully breathe in the season’s sights, sounds, and smells – like the golden hues along the coastal lanes – you need the roof down. Drive Devon’s MX-5 is a classic convertible, easy to drop or put back up if a brisk autumn shower surprises you. No complicated electric roofs here, just pure, simple fun.

2 – Plenty of range

It’s a trusty petrol engine with plenty of miles to roam. Revel in the spirited purr as you wind through leafy lanes and rugged coasts, top down and heart full.

3 – Taming lane anxiety

Those narrow lanes with towering hedgerows can be intimidating, especially if you spot a tractor rounding the bend. No worries – the MX-5’s petite frame makes it a breeze to navigate Cornwall’s and Devon’s charming coastal roads, whether that’s the winding lanes near Polperro or the scenic cliffside drives around Bude.

4 – Picnic-ready boot

There’s space for your hamper, warm blankets, and maybe a change of clothes for a cosy overnight stay at one of the many fantastic South West 660 Partner venues.

5 – Pure driving joy

With its zippy little engine and rear-wheel drive, the MX-5 is as playful as ever – a modern classic without the hassle. Perfect for twisting roads and autumn adventures, whether it’s the serene lanes hugging the Camel Estuary or the leafy drives around Dartmouth.

6 – Picture-perfect

You want that perfect sunset shot – car parked overlooking the rugged cliffs at Tintagel or by the colourful fishing boats in Mevagissey. Our second-generation NB MX-5 blends classic beauty with modern charm effortlessly.

7 – Dependably reliable

A Mazda through and through, with straightforward controls and no tech headaches – ideal for both new and seasoned drivers.

8 – Comfort wrapped in sportiness

Cosy, supportive seats that keep you snug on those winding stretches, but soft enough to enjoy the journey.

Need some scenic car park inspiration for those pitstops?

1 – Dorset – Ringstead Bay Car Park (DT2 8NG)

A hidden gem with views over Weymouth Bay and the Jurassic Coast. Great for fossil hunting or a quiet beach walk.

2 – Devon – Start Point Car Park (TQ7 2ET)

A remote, cliff-top location with sweeping views of the South Devon coast. The drive down is twisty and narrow -just the kind of lane your MX-5 was made for.

3 – Cornwall – Cape Cornwall Car Park (TR19 7NN)

A rugged, lesser-known spot near St Just with panoramic views of the Atlantic and the iconic chimney stack. Perfect for sunset shots with your MX-5 silhouetted against the sea.

4 – Somerset – Bossington Car Park (TA24 8HQ)

Near Porlock, this car park sits at the edge of Exmoor and offers access to coastal paths with views over the Bristol Channel. The lanes here are narrow and tree-lined – perfect for a top-down cruise.

Drive Devon and the South West 660 is waiting for you. Now it’s over to you – the question is…. shiny silver or baby blue?

Tucked into the rugged coastline of North Devon, on Route 11, Ilfracombe is a town that surprises and delights at every turn. With its blend of Victorian charm, contemporary creativity, and warm hospitality, it’s a standout stop along the South West 660.

Whether you’re indulging in artisan chocolate, exploring nearby castles, or settling into a stylish hotel, Ilfracombe invites you to slow down and savour the journey – here are some highlights and a SW660 hotel worth settling into for the night:

Ilfracombe Harbour

Ilfracombe Harbour has been a working port since at least the 12th century, with a settlement existing even earlier. Over the centuries, it has served as a vital link for trade, fishing, and travel across the Bristol Channel. Today, while leisure and tourism dominate, it remains a working harbour where fresh fish and seafood are landed daily.

Verity: A Towering Symbol of Truth

Down by the harbour, Damien Hirst’s Verity commands attention and is one of Ilfracombe’s most iconic, and controversial, landmarks. The 67-foot bronze sculpture of a pregnant woman holding a sword aloft is both anatomical and allegorical. With half her body flayed to reveal muscle and bone, Verity represents truth and justice in a raw, unapologetic form.

A Sweet Stop at Ilfracombe Chocolate Emporium

Sweeten your visit with a sensory treat at the Ilfracombe Chocolate Emporium. A beloved local shop that’s as whimsical as it is delicious. Step inside and you’re greeted by shelves of handmade chocolates, from classic bars to quirky novelties. Their range includes vegan, gluten-free, and no-added-sugar options, making it a guilt-free indulgence for all. Head to the rear for the informative and quirky chocolate museum!

Furthermore, The Emporium offers chocolate-making workshops, for anyone curious about the craft.

A Short Hop to Watermouth Castle

Just a few minutes drive outside the town lies Watermouth Castle, a family-friendly attraction that blends Victorian elegance with nostalgic fun. Inside, you’ll find vintage arcade games, a water show extravaganza, vintage displays and a treasure trove of curiosities. Outside, landscaped gardens a maze, and interesting things to interact with at every turn make it a hit with kids and grown-ups alike. It’s a perfect detour for those seeking a playful escape into history.

St Nicholas Chapel

Perched on Lantern Hill overlooking the harbour, this tiny whitewashed chapel is believed to be the oldest working lighthouse in the UK. The walk up offers panoramic views, and the chapel itself is steeped in maritime history.

South West Coast Path Walks

Ilfracombe is a gateway to some of the most scenic stretches of the South West Coast Path. Popular routes include the walk to Lee Bay or the more challenging trek toward Combe Martin. Expect dramatic cliffs, wildflowers, and sweeping sea views, ideal for slow travel and nature photography.

Lundy Island Day Trip

Accessible by boat from Ilfracombe, Lundy Island is a remote and rugged paradise known for its wildlife, walking trails, and historic buildings. Keep an eye out for puffins, seals, and even basking sharks in summer.

Fancy staying for longer than a day? Then look now further than SW660 Partner, The Carlton Hotel.

When it’s time to rest and recharge, The Carlton Hotel offers a warm welcome and exceptional hospitality. A proud South West 660 Partner, The Carlton is independently owned and operated by Michael and Eliot, whose passion for quality and community shines through in every detail.

You can expect modern and comfortable en-suite rooms with all the amenities you’d expect, with some being dog friendly. Guest needing accessible features are well served. With ramped access, lift, and low reception counters. Also really well thought out accessible rooms.

Whether you’re staying for a night, a weekend or longer, The Carlton’s rooms provide a peaceful retreat after a day of exploring.

Dining at The Carlton

Dining at The Carlton is a highlight in itself. The Brasserie, led by chef-patron Eliot, offers relaxed yet refined meals crafted from locally sourced ingredients.
