Outdoor Lidos and Pools

Lidos (pronounced lee-doe) were named as such due to their proximity to the sea and derives from an Italian word meaning beach or shore.

Lidos and outdoor pools have faced increasing costs recently due to energy prices so they’re delighted to see you. In return, you get to enjoy glistening clear, warmer water, no over-crowding, good facilities, and even some treats from their serving hatch.

Sea Pools

Sea pools can also face a battering with the ever changing climate and seasons. The joy of a sea pool is that you can give yourself to the ocean but in a more contained and safe feeling space if you will. Some are maintained by local councils and others are left to run wild.

Use it or Lose it

Many, if not all, are cared for and maintained by the local council or community and volunteer run charities, so if you don’t visit and use it, you’ll risk losing it. With all that’s on offer and many of these venues, why wouldn’t you have them on your must visit list?

I have collated a few options along the routes, to chill out in, during your South West 660 road trip. So pack your beach bag essentials, and let’s dive in…

Route 3 – Lyme Regis to Exeter

Topsham Pool, Topsham

Tucked away in the middle of estuary town Topsham, this lovely community-run pool was born out of nearly a decade of hard graft and fundraising back in the 70’s, finally opening in 1979. Topsham Pool is 25m swimming pool, heated to at least 27-28 degrees with plenty of seating, umbrellas, showers, lockers, changing rooms and some vending machines. Booking isn’t available, and queues are a common site for this lovely venue, with people normally being treated to a game of bowls as they wait with Topsham Bowls Club on its doorstep.

Route 4 – Exeter to Dartmouth

Teignmouth Lido, Teignmouth

Situated a stones throw away from Teignmouth beach, this outdoor pool as been brought back to life recently thanks to decarbonaistation investments by the local council, resulting on it being incredibly eco-friendly. The heated 25m outdoor swimming pool has seated area around the edges, vending machines for drinks and snacks and changing rooms with hot showers and toilets.

Shoalstone Sea Pool, Brixham

Shoalstone Pool is a 53 metre sea water swimming pool situated in a stunning position on Brixham seafront and run by a charity. It is built into a natural rock pool that has been popular for bathing since Victorian times, you can relax on one of the sun loungers or deck chairs that are available for hire, or relax on the grass and decking. There is a shower and changing rooms, lifeguards during peak season and independent food and drinks offerings available too. The pool is free but donations are welcome.

Dartmouth Pool, Dartmouth

Situated a mile inland from the River Dart and stunning town of Dartmouth, this charity-run swimming pool is a 25 metre by 8.5 metre outdoor pool and is heated to 28 degrees celsius. With space around the pool’s edge for relaxing, shower and change facilities, lifeguards at the ready, there is also a small but perfectly formed shop selling drinks, snacks and swim accessories. Online booking is available which is great if you want to be sure of as swim slot.

Route 5 – Dartmouth to Plymouth & Route 6 – Plymouth to St Austell

Tinside Lido, Plymouth

Overlooking Plymouth seafront, this semi circular Grade II-listed outdoor salt water swimming pool offers gorgeous surroundings for locals and road trippers to enjoy. At 55 meters in diameter, it features several water features, a glorious sun deck with deck chairs for hire, it’s no wonder this Art Deco pool is appears in the top 10 of Europe’s outdoor pools and is certainly instagrammable. Tinside Lido Café is perfect for grabbing a drink and an ice cream. This pool says it is accessible to anyone with accessibility needs, and is therefore truly open to all.

Route 7 – St Austell to Penzance & Route 8 – Penzance to St Ives

Jubilee Pool, Penzance

Said to be the largest art deco sea water lido and geothermal pool in the country, Jubilee Pool has an envious position overlooking Mounts Bay. Over time it has been restored to its former glory with more modern facilities, whilst retaining its period feel. An interesting pool due to its a triangular shape, it is cocooned by its crisp white walled backdrop and has three options for water lovers.

One corner holds the geothermal pool which requires booking for its hourly slots, were you can be enveloped in its toasty 30 and 35 degrees C waters, a temperature that can be sustained with a very low carbon footprint. The main pool is bookable as well as welcoming walk ins and there’s a learner pool for open for the summer holidays too, with the sea water bathing pools usually a refreshing 1 to 2 degrees above sea temperature. The Jubilee Pool Café serves breakfast, lunch, snacks and drinks using local suppliers and has indoor and outdoor seating.

Route 10 Padstow to Clovelly

Bude Sea Pool, Bude

Bude Sea Pool is a semi natural pool which opened in 1930 as a safe haven for bathers, it is looked after by its passionate charity and a much loved and well used free pool. With the cliffs at the rear providing some shelter, the staggered terrace provides space for sitting or changing whilst the cheerfully coloured beach huts look on.

At approximately 91m long and 45m wide, it is nearly double the length of an Olympic swimming pool and is one of the largest tidal pools of its kind in the UK. As this is a tidal pool, high tide is to be respected and avoided, as well as when the weather is windy and wild but the comings and goings of all types of friendly swimmers seeking the same joy will warm your heart whatever the weather.

Route 11 – Clovelly to Lynton

Westward Ho! Rock Sea Pool, Westward Ho!

Built in the mid to late 1800’s by the Victorians who travelled many miles to the sea at Westward Ho!, this pool is impressively built right in the middle of the rock pools which are great for a ramble at low tide. This is a very natural, no fuss, free offering, so seek facilities, food and drink nearby from local businesses in this lovely seaside town.

Some juicy facts

A recent VisitBritain survey indicates 42% of inbound tourists would enjoy a visit to a winery. Well in the South West, you’re in luck! We have identified 18 wineries and vineyards along the South West 660 routes, ranging from boutique to large established sites.

English Wine, not be confused with British wine which is made from imported grapes, has seen extraordinary growth over the last few years. Wine education, increased temperatures from climate change, and growing awareness of the industry have all contributed.

According to Wines of Great Britain (source Wine GB Industry Report), the top five most planted varieties in the South West (by hectares) – which includes the counties of Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, Avon, Dorset, Worcestershire, Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, Isles of Scilly and Channel Islands are:

• Pinot Noir 92
• Chardonnay 52
• Seyval Blanc 37
• Bacchus 34
• Madeleine Angevine 24

Who’s that behind the cask?

Well, a vineyard grows its own grapes on the land, and will use another winery to help process its grape harvest for them. A winery is where wine is produced. Many of the vineyards produce a range of wines including Sparkling, Rosé, White, and Red, some from single varieties and others carefully blended using different grape varieties.

It should never be underestimated how our wacky weather and cheeky yet meddling wildlife really add challenges to the success or failure of the vines throughout the year. Without the hard graft and dynamism of the vineyard team, you wouldn’t see the glorious laden rows of sugary juice parcels that go from bunch to bottle. Many (if not all) vineyards and wineries are family-owned, bursting with passion, and with well-earned awards to show for their efforts.

It’s worth noting that all of these venues will naturally have sloped or uneven ground so are not suitable for everyone, but their cellar door or dining areas might be on a more level accessible area, so it’s always best to check with them direct if you have any specific needs or queries.

Route 2 – Weymouth to Lyme Regis

Bride Valley Vineyard, Litton Cheney, Dorset

Previously a sheep farm and situated a few miles inland of the glorious Dorset coastline, Bride Valley enjoys clean chalky Kimmeridgian soil almost identical to that found in the Champagne region of France, meaning perfect conditions for sparling wine..

Tours: Prebookable tours from April to September on Thursdays and Saturdays. Walk around the vineyard, followed by a tasting of four of their wines in the tasting room and gardens.

Grapes: Chardonnay, Blanc de Blanc & Pinot Noir

Cellar Door: Situated in the old stable block, it is open Thursday to Saturday

Cafe or Restaurant: No

Children: Children welcome for a small fee, includes a soft drink and some activities for them to enjoy.

Dogs: Dogs are welcome

Furleigh Estate, Bridport, Dorset

Situated within 85 acres on a former dairy farm converted into a modern and productive vineyard and winery. They have a beautiful stone walled tasting room, a cellar door, and small terrace overlooking the vines.

Tours: Prebookable tours from Easter to end of October include a 2 hour Grand Tour on Thursdays to Saturdays or 1.5 hour Classic Tour on Wednesdays. Alternatively, you can drop in for a taster of 3 wines for £5 during cellar door hours.

Grapes: Bacchus, Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier, Rondo & Pinot Noir

Cellar Door: Open Tuesday to Saturday

Cafe or Restaurant: No

Children: Children can visit the cellar door but under 18’s are not allowed on tours

Dogs: Dogs are welcome but not allowed in the winery

Route 3 – Lyme Regis to Exeter

Dalwood Vineyard, Dalwood, Nr Axminster

Many a good idea can be discussed over a pint or two but lost in the noise of local chatter and never come to fruition, however the local skittle team went on to do it and Dalwood Vineyard was born in 2009. The vineyard site is west to south-west facing on a gentle hill, overlooking the village and specialises in sparkling wines made to the traditional method, as well as some excellent still wines.

Tours: End of May to September, tours will be posted on their socials or feel free to call them to arrange a visit.
Grapes: Seyval Blanc, Pinot Noir, Solaris and Madeleine Angevine
Cellar Door: No but you can buy from them online, call them to pop in and purchase straight from their home nearby to the vineyard or nearby Millers Farm Shop sells their wines too
Cafe or Restaurant: No
Children: Yes children are welcome
Dogs: Dogs are welcome

Heron Farm, Honiton, East Devon

With a unique ‘Grand Designs’ building and exquisite walled flower garden, Heron Farm has quickly become a firm favourite in the area for business people, passers-by, locals and with a play park, fairy garden and some sheep, it’s a great place for families too. They also have two electric vehicle charging points.

Tours: April to October every Saturday at 12pm, a 90min tour includes a vineyard and orchard tour, seeing the kitchen garden and ‘gin’ orchard, and finishing off with some tastings at the Vineyard Kitchen. Private tours for up to 10 people can be booked Tuesday to Sunday.
Grapes: Seyval Blanc, Solaris, and Pinot Noir
Cellar Door: Yes they have a shop within their Vineyard Kitchen which also sells local and sustainable gifts and lifestyle products alongside their wines, gin and apple juice.
Cafe or Restaurant: The Vineyard Kitchen is award-winning and serves breakfast, and lunch with all day brunch dishes too. Dine indoors in their modern building or outdoors amongst the kitchen garden full of flowers and little streams. They hold exciting dining events throughout the year too.
Children: Children are very welcome, including the tours, with lots on offer for them.
Dogs: Dogs are welcome in the shop, ground floor of the Vineyard Kitchen and Walled Garden. They are welcome on the tours but you’ll be asked to skip the fairy garden and orchard part.

Lily Farm, Budleigh Salterton, East Devon

Within easy walking distance of Budleigh Salterton on the Jurassic Coast, Lily Farm Vineyard has been producing since 2005. Situated approximately 40 – 50 metres above sea level the vines flourish in their South West facing position. We believe they are the smallest vineyard to win gold in the English Wine Awards last year, for their Bacchus.

Tours: May to September 2023 every Thursday, Friday and Saturday for approximately 45mins. Vineyard tour includes a tasting of 4 wines.

Grapes: Seyval Blanc, Pinot Noir, Rondo & Bacchus

Cellar Door: Open Friday & Saturday during low season, Thursday to Saturdays during May to September

Cafe or Restaurant: No

Children:  No

Dogs: Guide dogs only

Lympstone Manor, Lympstone, East Devon

With vines planted in 2018 on a site has been identified as one of the very best in the country, Michelin star chef and proprietor Michael Caines MBE has an enviable and incredible spot above the Exe Estuary.

Grapes: Champagne: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay & Meunier

Tours: Tours will run on Wednesdays, May and September for resident guests plus special lunch packages for non-residents.

Cellar Door: No

Cafe or Restaurant: Michelin-starred Lympstone Manor restaurant and their more relaxed offering The Pool House Restaurant are both open to residents and non-residents, but must be booked in advance. The vineyard tour package includes lunch in Lympstone Manor.

Children: No

Dogs: No

Pebblebed Vineyard, Topsham, East Devon

A well-known East Devon vineyard, now in the passionate and careful hands of Darts Farm, is tucked away just on the outskirts of Topsham. Their sparkling wines are made using the traditional champagne method.

Grapes: Rondo, Seyval Blanc, Madeline Angevine, Phoenix, Seyval Blanc & Pinot Noir

Tours: From May to September, on Thursdays and Saturdays, you can enjoy a 2 hour vineyard tour and wine tasting with food (cheese and charcuterie).

Cellar Door: Yes at tour times. Outside of these times, you can buy their wine from Darts Farm Shop itself.

Cafe or Restaurant: No but the tour includes lunch

Children: Children are welcome

Dogs: No

Route 4 – Exeter to Dartmouth

Kenton Park Estate, Exeter

Kenton Park Estate is quite frankly a sweet shop for adults, who like good food and wine. There is far too much on offer to cover in a small space of words. On the west side of the Exe Estuary, nestling in the foothills of Haldon Forest, they offer accommodation, safari huts, ‘wine in the wild’ adventures, as well as the usual tours.

Grapes: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Reichensteiner, Solaris & Bacchus

Tours: Open Tuesday to Saturday from mid-April to late September, various tours lasting a minimum 2.5 hours are prebookable including Wine and Cheese, Wine, Cheese and Gin, and a Wine safari. 1 hour wine tastings are held in the restaurant on Wednesdays and Saturdays and include a selection of 6 wines with accompanying nibbles.

Cellar Door: Yes, pop into the bar for sales.

Cafe or Restaurant: Yes, Motley Cru Bar and Grill is their vineyard kitchen offering all sorts of deliciousness.

Children: Children are welcome

Old Walls Vineyard, Bishopsteignton, Teignmouth

With evidence of a vineyard on the Old Walls land more than 2000 years ago, the vineyard is positioned facing towards the Tegn estuary. You can even stay on the vineyard in one of their lodges overlooking the vines, two of which are dog friendly. You can also opt for a stay and pick experience or even rent a vine.

Grapes: Regent, Rondo, Dunkelfelder, Bacchus and Reichensteiner, Auxerrois & Pinot Noir

Tours: Fridays, Saturdays and every first and third Sunday of the month you can enjoy a 4 hour experience including tour, tastings and a ploughmans lunch. Every Friday, Twilight tours and Tapas are on offer too.

Cellar Door: You can buy wines from the restaurant.

Cafe or Restaurant: Regents Bistro enjoys a lofty position with views down the valley.

Children: Yes

Dogs: Dogs are welcome on tours and in the Bistro

Sandridge Barton – the home of Sharpham Wine, Stoke Gabriel, South Devon

One of Devon’s most renowned names, Sandridge Barton is the new home of Sharpham wines, after a move across the estuary from their original site. Exeter’s well-known restaurant Circa soon followed to take up the food offering on-site. Three self-catering properties are available of varying sizes with views of either the vineyard, the estuary, or the winery and orchard.

Grapes: Pinot Gris, Madeleine Angevine, Pinot Noir & Bacchus

Tours: Prebookable guided tasting includes a relaxed guided tasting of three wines, two Devon cheeses with a tour around the winemaking facilities. Not a tour, but self guided wine tasting flight can be booked as a 1 hour slot and pay on arrival to enjoy a choice of four wines with a tasting guide leaflet. Small plates are available as an add-on.

Cellar Door: Yes

Cafe or Restaurant: Yes, Circa run the restaurant in the old stone milking parlour, serving seasonally led, low impact but uber local and delicious dishes.

Children: Children are welcome in the restaurant and on the self-guided tasting

Route 5 – Dartmouth to Plymouth

Calancombe Estate, Nr Modbury, South Devon

With plenty on offer here for food and drink lovers, Calancombe boasts a vineyard, winery and distillery. As well as wine from their own grapes, they make Dartmouth English Gin, cyder, cassis and apple brandy.

Grapes: Blanc de Noir, Pinot Noir, Bacchus & Madeleine Angevine

Tours: Self guided tours from Wednesday to Sunday, using their vineyard app or a more traditional map if you prefer, with a chance to sample wine, cassis and gin.  2.5 hour grand tours are available Thursday to Sundays, which includes a cheese and charcuterie lunch, wine and cassis tastings. The ultimate experience is a 5.5 hour epic day of informative sessions, tour, lunch, tasting, gin making and more!

Cellar Door: Open Wednesdays to Sundays, they sell all their drinks as well as cheese and charcuterie.

Cafe or Restaurant: Their restaurant serves lunch, afternoon teas, and tapas. Dishes include local produce and offer inspiration from classic Mediterranean dishes with a modern twist. During the summer they will also open for dinner on Friday and Saturday evenings. Special events are also on offer.

Children: Children are welcome in the cellar door, vineyard, restaurant and on the self-guided or private tour.

Dogs: Dogs are allowed in the vineyard, but not the cellar door, tasting areas, or winery.

Route 6 – Plymouth to St Austell

Looe Valley Vineyard, South Cornwall

Growing since 2008, you can get a little hands on various parts of their tours such as pruning in the vineyard or having a go in the winery, along with learning the professional way to taste wine.

Grapes: Bacchus, Solaris, Schonburger, and Pinot Noir

Tours: Prebooked only, they offer 2 hour tours with wine tasting on Thursday and Saturdays, with additional dates added in as demand increases throughout the summer.

Cellar Door: You can pop in a buy wines or call them to sort out an order.

Cafe or Restaurant: No

Children: Children are welcome

Dogs: Dogs are welcome

Knightor Winery, St Austell, South Cornwall

Above the shores of St Austell Bay, their winery is situated amongst four acres of orchards and a series of wildflower meadows. In addition to their still and sparkling wines, they offer a selection of vermouth and a newly released canned rose wine spritz. It is also a popular wedding and events space.

Grapes: Bacchus, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon & Black de Blanc

Tours: Guided 60 minute winery tour with tasting of 4 wines every Sunday, April to October. 2 hour vineyard tour with charcuterie and cheese board, with a tasting of 4 wines every Thursday during July and August. Walk-ins welcome for tastings are Saturdays and Sundays. Special events held in the Events Barn throughout the Summer including a Winemakers Dinner or King’s BBQ Royale.

Cellar Door: Yes

Cafe or Restaurant: The Winery Kitchen is open on Sundays for epic Sunday lunch using local produce.

Route 7 – St Austell to Penzance

Polgoon Vineyard and Orchard, Penzance, Cornwall

Set back 1 mile inland from Penzance harbour, Polgoon Vineyard and Orchardwas established by former fish merchants, transferring their passion from the sea to the soil. They have diversified with their orchard and, in addition to their wines, make their own flavoured ciders and even a cider brandy.

Grapes: Bacchus, Rondo, Pinot Noir, Ortega, Seyval Blanc, and Sauvignon Blanc

Tours: Guided 90-minute vineyard tours every Thursday and Friday which includes a tasting of 5 drinks. Self-guided vineyard tours run daily which include tastings of 3 wines. Sparkling wine tour runs every Saturday which includes wine tasting.

Cellar Door: Yes, the vineyard shop sells their own wines, honey, eggs and jams.

Cafe or Restaurant: Their Vine House café is an al fresco affair with covered areas, and serves homemade pizzas, cheese platters and light lunches using local produce.

Children: Children are welcome

Dogs: Dogs are welcome in the vineyard and café but are not allowed in the winery or shop

Route 9 – St Ives to Wadebridge

The Atlantic Vineyard, Nr Newquay

Planted in 2022, this organic vineyard 3 miles inland from Newquay, is in its infancy. Having converted 7.5 acres of South West facing potato and barley plantings into the vineyard, they are striving to become one of the first Net Zero vineyards in the UK.

Grapes: Divico, Pinotin, Solaris, Muscaris, Johanniter

Tours: Tour dates will be released during Summer 2023. Wander through the 7 acres of Earth-Friendly vines, bring a picnic blanket, and relax while taking in the views. Enjoy a refreshing taste of delicious wine in their barn, from partnered European vineyards until their harvest is ready.

Route 10 – Wadebridge to Clovelly

Trevibban Mill Vineyard and Orchards, Nr Padstow

A few miles from Padstow, this contemporary winery produces wines and cider. It is also available for events and weddings. Planted in 2008, apple trees, sweet chestnuts and other fruit trees were planted in addition four years later.

Grapes: Pinot Noir, Blanc de Noir, Blanc de Blanc.

Tours: Separate wine and cider tastings on offer every day. Guided tours on Wednesday, Thursdays and Saturdays from May to October which include a tasting of 5 drinks or a 3-hour grand walking tour that includes lunch, and a wine/cider tutored tasting consisting of 7 drinks in their tasting room every Saturday from April to September.

Cellar Door: Yes

Cafe or Restaurant: Sharing platters to compliments the wines, ciders and other local drinks are on offer in the tasting room and balcony, bookings or walk-ins welcome. Venn Valley Vineyard, Nr Barnstaple, North Devon

Amongst the rolling North Devon hills,and only 4 miles from bustling Barnstaple, the vineyard lies on the same latitude as the great wine growing regions around Cologne in Germany. It is a newer vineyard with its first wines available in 2023.

Tours: 90min tours run twice a day on Fridays and Saturdays from late March to early October, which includes tasting of four wines.

Oately Vineyard, North Somerset

Between the Quantock Hills and the Bristol Channel coast, this Somerset vineyard has quite a history, having been established in 1989. With low intervention and eco friendly husbandry, they pride themselves on being unspoilt and uncommercial.

Tours: From end of Apri to beginning of Septemberl, experience DIY self-guided 90 minute tours with choice of 3 or 4 white wine selection so you can find a picnic spot to enjoy them. Bring your own food or add on a food hamper with your booking from the local farm shop. Guided private tasting experiences are available on Fridays to Sundays with one of the family members.

Cellar Door: Open for wine sales on Saturday, no booking required, taste before you buy and wines by the glass.

Wellhayes Vineyard

Focussing on just sparkling wine using the four grape varieties they grow, the south facing slopes and red Devonian soil make for excellent conditions. They also hold music events onsite.

Tours: Prebookable 90 minute tours May to September on Wednesdays and Sundays, includes walking around the vineyard, visiting the winery, a glass of their sparkling wine, a sample of their chocolates and a traditional cream tea.

Embarking on a journey along the South West 660 is akin to stepping into a postcard. Rugged cliffs meet the tumultuous waves of the Atlantic Ocean. Pretty fishing villages and sweeping country fields. What better way to experience the charm and beauty of these carefully designed routes than in a classic VW campervan?

The South West 660 route is broken into 12 manageable sections – Freebird Campers are based in Colyford near the Dorset border, so we start off in Section 3 of the route. You can do these in one or multiple visits in any order you like. Or even revisit your favourite areas, with the 660 membership you get loads of inspiration and fantastic discounts. The choice really is yours.

From the quaint fishing villages of Devon to the dramatic coastal landscapes of Cornwall, join us as we journey through parts of this picturesque coastal route. Making stops at the Caravan & Motorhome Club sites at Dartmouth, Looe, Godrevy Point, Tintagel, and Bude. If required, Freebird Campers provide membership to the CMC (pitches at member prices) when you hire one of our vans.

These club sites are perfect for pitching up and breaking your Route 660 journey. Each site has their own fantastic attributes. Stunning coastal views and walks, or steeped in history like Tintagel castle.

To begin…

We start at Colyford home of Freebird Campers:Make your way along routes 3 & 4 to Hill Head Campsite near Dartmouth. Set in 22 acres of beautiful Devon countryside close to the coast, a campsite gem nestled along the rugged coastline of Devon. Spend the day hiking along the coastal path, breathing in the salty sea air and soaking in the tranquillity of the surroundings. In addition, Dartmouth and Kingsbridge are close by if you’d prefer a tempting selection of shops and restaurants.

Hillhead Club Campsite offers fantastic facilities. Pitches offer stunning views of the sea. Outdoor heated swimming pool, indoor complex housing, a shop, bar, restaurant, and takeaway service for all the conveniences you could want. As the sun begins to set, you can retire to our campervan for a cozy night under the stars.

Into Cornwall…

Heading on towards the historic fishing town of Looe you travel through route 4 and into 5: Looe is nestled on the south coast of Cornwall. Meandering through its narrow streets, lined with colourful cottages and bustling seafood restaurants. You can’t help but be enchanted by its old-world charm. Park up your campervan overlooking the harbour and indulge in freshly caught fish and chips. Watch the boats bobbing on the gentle waves and let the world wisp you away for a moment.

Onto the Atlantic Highway…

Traveling onward to Route 9: Another Freebird favourite is Godrevy Point, a windswept headland on the north coast of Cornwall. Famous for its iconic lighthouse and sweeping views of the Atlantic, this rugged landscape is a photographer’s dream. Whats more, you can spend hours exploring the rocky shoreline, searching for hidden coves and secret beaches. As the waves crash against the cliffs, feel a sense of awe at the raw power of nature. You can book a pitch at Godrevy Park Club Campsite currently being extensively improved and will be finished in May 24.      

Onwards! To Tintagel on Route 10: No trip to Cornwall would be complete without a visit to Tintagel. The legendary birthplace of King Arthur. Perched on the rugged cliffs of the north coast, this ancient castle has captured the imaginations of visitors for centuries. You can hike along the coastal path, marvelling at the breathtaking views and imagine the tales of knights and dragons that once echoed through the walls. As we explored the ruins, we felt a sense of connection to the past, knowing that we were treading in the footsteps of legends. Trewethett Farm Club Campsite is right on the Route 660 & coast path and is a fabulous stop off to rest a while.

And finally…

The destination for now brings us to Bude. A charming seaside town on the border between Cornwall and Devon. The sandy beaches and lively atmosphere, it’s the perfect place to end your coastal trip. Explore the hidden coves and indulge in freshly caught seafood. Brave a dip in the large sea pool, and wander along the picturesque canal. We know that the memories of our journey will stay with us forever, a testament to the beauty and wonder of the West Country coast.

The Pig On The Beach – For Relaxed Luxury. (Route 1 Sandbanks to Weymouth)

Where do we start with the Pig On The Beach? Maybe outside – with its stunning views out to Old Harry Rocks and the Isle Of Wight. It’s beautiful walled kitchen garden, its own path down to the beach, the shepherds hut treatment rooms and even its very own herd of Dorset Horn Sheep. The Cobb, Lyme Regis – Route 2 Weymouth to Lyme Regis

It’s little wonder that Monmouth Beach, stretching a mile westwards from Lyme Regis harbour, is awash with photographers during big storms. As south-westerly winds blow in from the Atlantic Ocean, Lyme Regis has no natural protection. The harbour wall, known locally as the Cobb, takes the full-on force of the powerful waves and watching the water crash into the breakwater is mesmerising. Watch from a safe vantage point, or, if you’re feeling fancy, head to Mark Hix’s Oyster and Fish House for impressive views and even better local produce. It seems apt to also suggest a visit to the RNLI lifeboat station on the Cobb, to learn more about the charity’s life-saving work and view the inshore lifeboat.

Berry Head – Route 4 Exeter to Dartmouth

Devon’s Brixham Harbour is an exciting place to storm watch – if you’re more of a cautious bystander and don’t fancy taking the pelting rain and gale force winds face on, head to one of the many pavement cafes. If however you’re more of a thrill seeker, make your way to Berry Head. This stunning headland (which is a National Nature Reserve) is cradled by the ocean on three sides making it an exhilarating place to witness the power of nature. With views across Torbay and beyond, watch as the waves pound the rugged coastline. The Berry Head hotel makes the most wonderful retreat (and treat with its 4* status) after a day of storm watching.

Porthleven – Route 7 St Austell to Penzance

If you’ve ever seen national storm coverage on the news, the chances are you’ve seen Porthleven’s famous clock tower being pummelled by giant waves. It’s one of the county’s most iconic spots to storm watch and well worth it for the dramatic backdrop of the harbour (Britain’s most southerly port). It’s not uncommon to spot 20ft-plus waves flying up in the air, their energy derived from hitting the shallow reef just off the shore. If you feel awakened by the exhilaration of driving rain and bracing winds, then find a safe vantage point and grab a camera. Alternatively, watch the waves from the comfort of the The Harbour Inn.

Lizard Point- Route 7 St Austell to Penzance

With some of the UK’s best coastal panoramas on this section of the route, really, there are endless lookout points to watch a storm unfurl. But it’s exciting arriving at Lizard Point to witness the energy of the unforgiving seas during a storm, knowing you are at Britain’s most southerly point. This remote, unsheltered peninsula takes a real bashing during the winter months and it’s a mecca for storm watchers! Once you’ve been awakened by the elements and are ready to retreat back to the warmth, try the Wavecrest Café – a quick peek at their image gallery will show you just how cosy it is to be tucked away here during stormy season.

Sennen Cove – Route 8 Penzance to St Ives

Famed for being the most westerly point in Cornwall, and just around the corner from Land’s End, Sennen Cove is no stranger to ginormous waves. As the raging Atlantic Ocean crashes over the Cowloe Reef and against the rugged rocks, it’s a special place to watch nature pummel the coastline. There is something exhilarating about being out in the elements. As long as conditions permit, you may want to take on the 3-mile stretch of South West Coast Path from Sennen Cove to Land’s End where you’ll get views out across Whitesand Bay towards Cape Cornwall. If you prefer the idea of cosying up in a warm pub while the wind howls outside, then head to the Old Success Inn (one of the excellent St Austell Brewery pubs) and watch the storm unfold from indoors. You might even choose to hunker down over-night to really make the most of their unrivalled coastal views on a stormy evening!

Godrevy – Route 9 St Ives to Padstow

Travelling along the picturesque route out of St Ives and heading along the coast (section 9), you will get to Godrevy Point. Here you’ll find a large National Trust carpark (although after a lot of rain, this sometimes closes). Continue past the carpark to the headland and here you get prime views across to St Ives and out to sea where wave after wave roll in. But it’s the view the other way that can be spectacular during a storm. On a small island, three miles out to sea, stands Godrevy Lighthouse. If you’re lucky, you might just catch it during that perfect golden light and just as the cloud cover lifts – it’s moody and magical to watch the lighthouse appear from afar.

Storm Watching Safety

It would be remiss of us not to talk about the importance of keeping yourself safe when storm watching. Ensure you keep a close eye on local weather reports and more importantly weather warnings and heed the advice given. The power of the ocean cannot be underestimated – stay away from the water. It’s too easy to be caught off guard by rogue waves so stay safe and stay back. Check tide times and if you’re unsure, ask locally for information – don’t get caught out by rising tides. Wear appropriate clothing, take a mobile phone and don’t take any risks – no matter how exhilarating it seems at the time, you don’t want to find yourself in trouble.

Enjoy seasonal food with meat and veggie options available to purchase and the bar will be stocked with organic beers, ciders and spirits.

Budleigh Music Festival: 30 June – 8 July

St Endellion Easter Festival: 8 – 16 April

Celebrating its 50^th anniversary this year, the St Endellion Easter Festival offers classical music and literary sessions. You can enjoy intimate chamber music, cosy candlelit concerts or join in the Come and Sing event on the first day. Literary lunchtime events take place on 11 and 13 April in collaboration with the North Cornwall Book Festival.

Porthleven Food Festival: 21 – 23 April

The Porthleven Food Festival is a three-day food and music event in partnership with acclaimed chef Jude Kereama. Expect a chefs’ theatre, food and farmers market, masterclasses, net loft feast nights and music at various venues across Porthleven.

Salcombe Crabfest: 30 April

Crabfest celebrates Salcombe’s fishing and tourism and you can sample delicious food from stalls and restaurants. Organised by the Rotary Club of Salcombe, the event also aims to raise money for local Devon charities. This year’s charities are Chill South Devon, Devon Mind and Devon Air Ambulance.

Fancy the essence of a pub crawl but without the negative connotations and instead with great food? Well Brixham is the place to go! With a horseshoe-shaped harbour, it is lined with independently owned venues that are blessed with fantastic views across the masts of many a boat or the vast ocean beyond. Brixham features on Route 4 Exeter to Dartmouth.

You could start with drinks at one end and grab a bite to eat from a few venues, or just pick one to dive hook, line and sinker into. If you’re an early bird, you may want to catch the worm (well fish), so do read on!

An early start?

Let’s start with the early bird outing; this is not a deal on dining out but rather a visit to Brixham fish market that starts at 6:20am. Brixham is now England’s largest fish market by value of fish sold, and if you want to get behind the scenes of this busy fishing port then here’s your chance. You’ll get to see what’s involved in getting the fish from sea to plate, learn about day boats & trawlers and as it’s in conjunction with Rockfish in aid of The Fisherman’s Mission, you can enjoy a fabulous fish breakfast afterwards whilst knowing you have contributed towards this tough industry.

If that is too early for you, then swing on by Rockfish’s very own fishmarket to pick up a perfectly prepared fillet from their own boat’s catch, or head to the restaurant if you’d rather have it cooked for you. They have their usual seaside cool interior or a fantastic sea facing terrace, alternatively grab a takeaway for harbourside consumption.

For poolside vibes, situated above Shoalstone pool and the big blue, is Shoalstone on the Lido. This cabin sized former pool storage room, is a uniquely small but perfectly formed café and is quite a find. With double the blue view if you sit on their decking or grab the table in the window, you’ll be rewarded with delectable seafood and personable service across lunch and dinner with breakfast on offer on the weekend.

All-day Eats

Prefer and easy-going alfresco pub feel or a funky, luxury interior for relaxed all day dining then head to The Prince William Restaurant and Bar. Think flower walls, plush velvet seating, vibrant colours and quirky lighting, where they have procured a fantastic varied menu of local seafood, meat and veggies with something on offer for all. Great for a sunny day sipping whilst overlooking the harbour.

For dinner with uninterrupted harbour views, Beamers Seafood Restaurant  is situated on the first floor of their building and without any disruption of passers-by. A classic interior of simple wooden seating with nautical accents around the room, they offer great local British fayre including seafood, meat and veg. If you can’t decide on a fish main, why not indulge in the seafood platter for two?

Feeling Curious?

If you’re hungry for something different then head just 200 yards inland to The Curious Kitchen, it’s great stop for coffee and cake, breakfast and lunch, plus the occasional evening event too. Their infamous brioche donuts are made by hand and sell out quickly pop them high on your to do list! They serve excellent coffee, extreme hot chocolates and alternative hot delights. Indulge in brunch of crab benedict or burrito wraps, and with lunch of gooey maccie cheese with kimchi, many a food craving can be fulfilled here.

And to drink…

Drink desires are sure to be satisfied with the options a stone’s throw from Brixham’s salt water.

Gin is still riding a wave of popularity and local brand, Brixham Gin, produce award winning gins with flavours including crab apple, strawberry, Christmas spiced and a hopped IPA version in addition to their London Dry. Pop into their venue ‘The Bottle Shop’ for a cool rustic interior where you can buy their gins plus local and international beers, or sit on a bench seat and quench your thirst.

Another local liquor is Deck Chair Gin who also offer interesting flavours in addition to their London dry gin. Choose from Raspberry, Lemon, Cucumber & Watermelon, Ruby Grapefruit, Cranberry & Lime, Sloe, Damson & Plum, plus their Riviera Rum. Enjoy it in many local venues including their Grade II listed cosy drinks-led pub, the New Quay Inn which dates back to the 1700’s, or purchase a bottle from Inspirations Brixham.

More drink options

This leads me on nicely to telling you that Inspirations Brixham is quite the shop! An emporium of gorgeous house and kitchen wares (new foodie gadget perhaps?) but also a boutique of booze – there’s an incredible array of local spirits to choose from, be sure to pop your head in.

Last but not least on the drink’s menu is Wine Loft of Brixham, a great place to indulge in a glass of wine, and savour their carefully chosen Spanish and Portuguese deli food alongside. With over 400 wines for sale over half are £15 per bottle or less and they find delight in helping you choose something in your budget to takeaway. If you don’t have room in the boot, you can buy online from them for nationwide delivery… perfect to solve those post road trip blues.

Somewhere to stay

If you can’t bear to leave this harbourside haven behind and wish to extend your stay, then head to the peak of the hill and find refuge at Berry Head Hotel. Situated on the edge of 6 acres of grounds, yet a short walk from the hustle and bustle of Brixham, this 4 star hotel harbours leisure facilities including an indoor swimming pool, jacuzzi & sauna to soothe your body and mind. When it comes to fulfilling your appetite, you can enjoy formal dining in their Bonaparte Restaurant or casual dining in their The View brasserie, with both offering their endless clifftop sea views.
