Surf’s up on the SW660! Whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned pro, there are lots of opportunities to ride the waves along the way. Here are a few top suggestions to surf along the SW660 route…

Surf in North Devon

This stretch of coast is officially world-class. In March 2022, North Devon was formally recognised as the 12th World Surfing Reserve, joining iconic locations such as Santa Cruz in California and Australia’s Gold Coast. A high density of outstanding surf and variety of waves for all abilities makes this part of the SW660 route a must-visit.

Adam Hall (pic credit: Rachael Hall)

North Devon Surfing Reserve

Local surfer Adam Hall says it’s hard to beat – and he would know. Adam was involved with putting together the application for North Devon to become a World Surfing Reserve and now helps the community-led organisation protect local breaks and their surf ecosystems. So where does he surf?

Saunton Sands beach is a surfers’ paradise (pic credit: Gordon Dryburgh)

‘In general terms, Saunton Sands (route 11) is a really good choice for nice, easy, mellow waves, if it’s not too windy. It’s a good start.

Croyde Beach is for experienced surfers (pic credit: N and M Photography)

‘Croyde (route 11) is for more experienced surfers who know what they’re doing. It’s a bit like ski runs, you’ve got you blacks, your blues, your greens. Croyde would aways be a black run. It’s good for more experienced or performance surfers because it’s generally bigger, faster and more powerful.

‘If it’s windy, you can go and hide away a bit at Putsborough (route 11). It’s a beautiful spot because you’ve got the Baggy Point headland which takes the sting out of the wind and swell.’

Woolacombe has everything a surfer needs (pic credit: Gordon Dryburgh)

Adam says Woolacombe is well set-up. ‘It’s probably the biggest beach town in North Devon so there are loads of facilities.’ he says. ‘It’s a good all-rounder for beginners and intermediates.’

Croyde and Woolacombe are lifeguarded during the warmer season.

WHERE TO STAY

The Collective at Woolsery is a seriously stylish, comfortable base. Choose from a selection of four luxurious rooms and suites above the village shop.

The Carlton Hotel in Ilfracombe is well-positioned to access all of that world-class surf. A friendly team and great food make this a year-round popular choice.

Surf in Cornwall

There are so many places to surf in Cornwall. That’s why surfer Martin Dorey moved to the county 30 years ago. The writer and environmental activist is the founder of The 2 Minute Foundation, a charity that encourages people to pick up beach litter. Martin has also written a series of books about travelling in his campervan. Martin reckons his home surf around Bude (route 10) takes some beating.

‘Bude is easy because it’s got two great beaches – Crookletsand Summerleze. Grab a coffee at Wild Spirits Wellness Café, run by a surfer and a yoga teacher. And the Electric Bakery is a really great place to get breakfast.

‘Back down the coast in Cornwall, you’ve got Newquay (route 9), of course, which is world famous. Watergate Bay is great for beginners, and then you’ve got Great Western and Fistral which are really popular. There are plenty of groovy cafes in and around town. Just around the corner from the Temple of Fringe Surf Shop is Kook, a juice bar run by a husband-and-wife team.

‘Going down the coast, you’ve got Perranporth (route 9), which is a huge beach with a great pub and live music bar, called The Watering Hole. They have loads of high-profile gigs there in the summer.’

Farther around is Whitsand Bay (route 6), which stretches from Rame Head to Portwrinkle. Be aware, however, that access to Whitsand is via steep cliff paths from the car parks at either end.

Martin Dorey’s latest book, Take the Slow Road: England and Wales, is about inspirational journeys around England and Wales by camper van and motorhome, including the South West 660.

WHERE TO STAY

Fistral Beach Hotel and Spa puts you right in the centre of the action. Between April and October, they offer two-night surf and stay packages, which includes a surf lesson.

Just a few sandy steps from Bude’s Crooklets Beach is Tommy Jacks. The tastefully done hotel rooms and apartments here are bright and spacious. Secure surfboard storage and a post-surf shower room are also available.

Surf in Dorset

Dorset might not have the deeply ingrained surf culture of Cornwall and North Devon, but it’s certainly making some waves, if you time it right. The county’s natural offshore reef means that the swell can form well. It’s a good place to dip your toe in if you’re a beginner.

Kimmeridge Bay (route 1) has consistent surf in the winter months and works best in offshore winds from the north. Note: the beach shares a border with a military firing range, so look out for the red flag.

Good times and good waves roll into Bowleaze Cove (route 1)when conditions are right.

Charmouth Beach (route 2) usually known for its fossil-rich cliffs and sandy shores, also attracts surfers throughout the year.

WHERE TO STAY

The Scott Arms is a pub with rooms and views over the Purbeck countryside. B&B accommodation includes double rooms. Breakfast includes locally sourced ingredients.

Lyme Regis is a good base for this stretch of coast. The Rock Point Inn is right by the town’s famous harbour. Settle into a stylish room overlooking the quayside.

TOP TIPS:

During the winter months, there are no lifeguards. This time of year is best left to the people who have surfed before and have the right kit for the cold water.

Scour the conditions. Check the local webcams before you figure out where you’re going to go.

Wearing a good-quality wetsuit is essential to keep warm and comfortable. Most surf schools provide them as part of their packages.

Understanding surf etiquette is crucial, especially in crowded lineups.

Beginners should follow basic rules, such as not dropping in on someone else’s wave and avoid collisions.

Understand rip currents – one of the biggest hazards for surfers and swimmers alike. If caught out, don’t panic. Swim parallel to the shore until you escape the current, then paddle back to safety.

About Rockfish…

Rockfish is a renowned seafood group founded by Mitch Tonks, a celebrated seafood chef and restaurateur who is still very much involved in all aspects of the business. “Tomorrow’s fish are still in the sea” is their tagline, encompassing their commitment to serving seafood that is always fresh and sourced daily.

His passion for sustainable seafood and championing underutilised British species of fish and shellfish have been the driving forces behind Rockfish’s success. Mitch’s vision is to make seafood accessible and enjoyable, while also ensuring that the marine environment is protected for future generations.

Rockfish operates its own fishing boat, Rockfisher, which lands her catch in Brixham (one of the UK’s busiest fishing ports) at dawn. That catch is then prepared at the quayside before being delivered to rockfish restaurants across the South West in time for service.

As you take your seat in one of their waterside venues, your server will talk through the daily selection available, marking each available fish species down on your paper tablecloth daily landings menu and highlighting the different ways their chefs can cook it to order for you – on the chargrill or freshly fried.

Rockfish prides itself on offering fresh, sustainable seafood in picturesque coastal locations. With 11 eateries on Routes 1 to 6, and a 12th being added to the shoal, each restaurant is perfectly positioned to provide waterside views and a unique and casual dining experience, making them a perfect pitstop along the South West 660.

All venues are dog and family friendly so round everyone up and plan that road trip with a reward for your tastebuds and your eyes. Did we mention they offer bottomless chips with your meal at their restaurants and free drinking water at their outdoor taps? Fill your tummy and top up your reusable bottle for the journey ahead.

If you’re too busy road tripping to stop for long, then why not opt for a takeaway? They offer takeaway all year round in Brixham, Dartmouth and Budleigh, season takeaway in Plymouth, and explorers can now enjoy click and collect fish and chips from Rockfish Exeter.

The sun’s mellow glow filters through the turning leaves, the crisp autumn air carries the scent of salt and earth, and the coast beckons with its timeless charm. The picnic’s packed, your favourite company is by your side – what’s missing? Of course, the perfect car. But not just any car.

If you’re setting out to explore the South West 660 this autumn, you want to do it in style. And we believe nothing captures that unique spirit better than hiring a Drive Devon MX-5 convertible.

Based in East Devon near Exeter on Route 3, right off those stunning coastal stretches of Route 3 on the South West 660, Drive Devon invites you to escape the motorway madness and meander Routes 1 to 12.

Visiting from further afield? Imagine stepping off at Exeter station or airport and heading off in your convertible sports car. Load your bags, drop the roof, and you’re off. In no time, you’ll be sipping a warm or cool drink by a serene harbour or wandering through golden-hued lanes, embracing slow travel at its finest.

Here’s your checklist for an unforgettable autumn road trip:

1 – No roof, all charm

To fully breathe in the season’s sights, sounds, and smells – like the golden hues along the coastal lanes – you need the roof down. Drive Devon’s MX-5 is a classic convertible, easy to drop or put back up if a brisk autumn shower surprises you. No complicated electric roofs here, just pure, simple fun.

2 – Plenty of range

It’s a trusty petrol engine with plenty of miles to roam. Revel in the spirited purr as you wind through leafy lanes and rugged coasts, top down and heart full.

3 – Taming lane anxiety

Those narrow lanes with towering hedgerows can be intimidating, especially if you spot a tractor rounding the bend. No worries – the MX-5’s petite frame makes it a breeze to navigate Cornwall’s and Devon’s charming coastal roads, whether that’s the winding lanes near Polperro or the scenic cliffside drives around Bude.

4 – Picnic-ready boot

There’s space for your hamper, warm blankets, and maybe a change of clothes for a cosy overnight stay at one of the many fantastic South West 660 Partner venues.

5 – Pure driving joy

With its zippy little engine and rear-wheel drive, the MX-5 is as playful as ever – a modern classic without the hassle. Perfect for twisting roads and autumn adventures, whether it’s the serene lanes hugging the Camel Estuary or the leafy drives around Dartmouth.

6 – Picture-perfect

You want that perfect sunset shot – car parked overlooking the rugged cliffs at Tintagel or by the colourful fishing boats in Mevagissey. Our second-generation NB MX-5 blends classic beauty with modern charm effortlessly.

7 – Dependably reliable

A Mazda through and through, with straightforward controls and no tech headaches – ideal for both new and seasoned drivers.

8 – Comfort wrapped in sportiness

Cosy, supportive seats that keep you snug on those winding stretches, but soft enough to enjoy the journey.

Need some scenic car park inspiration for those pitstops?

1 – Dorset – Ringstead Bay Car Park (DT2 8NG)

3 – Cornwall – Cape Cornwall Car Park (TR19 7NN)

4 – Somerset – Bossington Car Park (TA24 8HQ)

Near Porlock, this car park sits at the edge of Exmoor and offers access to coastal paths with views over the Bristol Channel. The lanes here are narrow and tree-lined – perfect for a top-down cruise.

Exploring Cinematic Gems – Top Film Locations Along The South West 660

If you’ve recently been to see blockbuster Wonka and wondered why the port in the fictional Roald Dahl city looked familiar, it’s might just be because you recognised Dorset’s Lyme Regis (route 2) where it was filmed! Production Designer Nathan Crowley told Time Out “There’s something about that stone Cobb (the harbour wall) and the way it curves that’s beautiful”. We couldn’t agree more! In fact, it’s little wonder the picturesque coastline of England’s southwest region has provided the backdrop for numerous iconic films.

With its treasure trove of cinematic landscapes, the region has been captivating audiences for decades. Albeit sometimes under the guise of far-off locations! Here we explore the dramatic cliffs, sweeping beaches, quaint fishing villages, idyllic harbours and grand mansions that feature in some of our best-loved films! Grab the popcorn and discover yet more reasons to explore the South West 660!

Style it out in Swanage – Route 1

Christopher Nolan’s 2017 film, Dunkirk, depicts the WWII Dunkirk evacuation and it saw stars including Harry Styles on set in Weymouth and Swanage for filming. Weymouth harbour features as a civilian fleet is taking off to aide the soldiers trapped in Dunkirk. The Georgian architecture of the town was deemed by the director as a suitable backdrop, though streetlights and parking meters on the harbourside road were hidden from the cameras in order to recreate the early 1940s! In another scene, characters played by Harry Styles & Fionn Whitehead travel from Weymouth to London by train. Though it’s a nighttime shot, Swanage railway station is still recognisable, with its original façade easily passing as a 1940s station.

Other locations on route 1 that have also featured in Hollywood include Lulworth Cove in 2013 World War Z. Some lucky locals were there for the moment Brad Pitt filmed the final beach scenes as he jumps off a boat and runs to shore into the arms of his on-screen family. Durdle Door served as a picturesque backdrop for Nanny McPhee and you might feel the urge to reenact the dancing scene in Tess Of The D’Urbervilles, shot above Dancing Ledge in 2008!

You’d be Weisz to stop in Teignmouth – Route 4

Heading further along the route, from Dorset into Devon you’ll reach the English Riviera. Another of our cinematic gems. Sheltered by the heights of Dartmoor, this east-facing coast between the Exe and Dart creates a special microclimate. The scenery and warmth led to the creation of a series of elegant resorts, including bohemian Teignmouth. And this was the partial setting for 2018 film, The Mercy. About ill-fated sailor Donald Crowhurst who attempted to sail around the world single-handedly in his vessel, the Teignmouth Electron. Starring Colin Firth and Rachel Weisz, we see Crowhurst preparing for his 1969 departure from Teignmouth with the harbour and seafront featuring heavily.

Step into Austen’s World – Route 5

Known locally as South Hams, the bottom corner of Devon is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and here you’ll find exceptional seascapes, pristine villages and historic towns. Some of the southwest’s most expensive postcodes are found on this stretch. It’s little wonder there is a huge collection of stately homes in the vicinity. Saltram House found just outside Plymouth, features in Ang Lee’s 1995 film of Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility as Norland Park, home of the Dashwood sisters, played by Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet. With stunning interiors and immaculately kept gardens it makes for a peaceful stopping point as you explore the area.

It’s About Time you visited – Route 7

With every inch of South Cornwall’s coast from St Austell Bay to Mount’s Bay an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, it lends itself perfectly as the setting of romantic comedy-drama About Time (2013). Directed by Richard Curtis and starring Rachel McAdams, Dohmnall Gleeson, Bill Nighy and Margot Robbie. Nighy and Gleeson play father and son, (and we soon learn that the men in the family have the ability to time hop) with scenes set in the family home, grade II listed Porthpean House. Located at the very start of route 7 in Porthpean village. Now available to hire for weddings or holidays and sleeping 21. This would make the most spectacular base from which to explore! The beach supposedly below the house is actually found eight miles further along the coast at a lovely quiet spot, Vault Beach.

Set Sail for Adventure – Route 8

The old fishing town of St Ives has become West Cornwall’s star attraction. Thanks to its selection of sandy beaches, quaint harbourside pubs and restaurants. But also a famous artsy heritage. And with its turquoise waters and gleaming sands, it made a great stand in for a more tropical location when it was chosen for some scenes in Pirates of the Caribbean – On Stranger Tides (2011). In all honesty though, we don’t need Hollywood stars and glitzy film sets to be wowed by this area. What could be better than watching seals bob in the harbour and surfers perform on Porthmeor Beach’s waves!

Another Day to Die for on the SW660 – Route 9

If we were to associate any part of the South West 660 with big stars, glitz and glamour it may well be the north coast of mid-Cornwall with its trendy hotels, stylish beach bars and gourmet restaurants. But its rocky headlands and vast sandy beaches are also the perfect place to experience Cornwall’s wilder side. Located just off route, as you head towards Newquay, be sure not to miss Holywell Bay.

This picture-perfect pristine bay is characterised by its expansive sandy shore, dramatic sand dunes and striking rock formations. Though practically unrecognisable in final scenes, it was in fact the setting for the Korean beach in 2002 Bond film, Die Another Day. Starring Pierce Brosnan, we see the British spy arrive in ‘North Korea’ in the opening sequence. The bay was filled with sea defenses and the lifeguard hut turned into a pill box with barbed wire and tank traps. Luckily today, though you may like to walk in the footsteps of Bond. The area is more widely recognized for its wonderful seabirds and rare plants and insects!

Sci-Fi Meets Surf and Sand – Route 11

Last but not least of our top cinematic gems, is Saunton Sands. Located halfway between Clovelly and Lynton (route 11). 3.5 miles of golden sand backed by the rolling expanse of Braunton Burrows dune system. The beach’s vast expanse and dramatic landscape provided an ideal setting for the large-scale, high-energy combat scenes in 2014 sci-fi film Edge Of Tomorrow starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt. The beach depicts a futuristic battlefield (where humanity battles alien invaders). But it’s not its only time as a cinematic canvas. Second World War Film ‘The Guernsey Literacy & Potato Peel Pie Society’ (2017) showed a fighter plane landing on Saunton Sands as part of the Guernsey coast. It was also the location for Robbie William’s ‘Angels’ music video (1997).

There’s something captivating about standing where famous scenes were filmed. As you travel along the South West 660 you’ll realise there is a touch of cinematic history to your journey! The route really is a treasure trove for film enthusiasts, nature lovers and adventurers alike.

Words and research by Lauren Heath

Some juicy facts

A recent VisitBritain survey indicates 42% of inbound tourists would enjoy a visit to a winery. Well in the South West, you’re in luck! We have identified 18 wineries and vineyards along the South West 660 routes, ranging from boutique to large established sites.

English Wine, not be confused with British wine which is made from imported grapes, has seen extraordinary growth over the last few years. Wine education, increased temperatures from climate change, and growing awareness of the industry have all contributed.

According to Wines of Great Britain (source Wine GB Industry Report), the top five most planted varieties in the South West (by hectares) – which includes the counties of Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, Avon, Dorset, Worcestershire, Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, Isles of Scilly and Channel Islands are:

Pinot Noir 92

Chardonnay 52

Seyval Blanc 37

Bacchus 34

Madeleine Angevine 24

Who’s that behind the cask?

Well, a vineyard grows its own grapes on the land, and will use another winery to help process its grape harvest for them. A winery is where wine is produced. Many of the vineyards produce a range of wines including Sparkling, Rosé, White, and Red, some from single varieties and others carefully blended using different grape varieties.

It should never be underestimated how our wacky weather and cheeky yet meddling wildlife really add challenges to the success or failure of the vines throughout the year. Without the hard graft and dynamism of the vineyard team, you wouldn’t see the glorious laden rows of sugary juice parcels that go from bunch to bottle. Many (if not all) vineyards and wineries are family-owned, bursting with passion, and with well-earned awards to show for their efforts.

It’s worth noting that all of these venues will naturally have sloped or uneven ground so are not suitable for everyone, but their cellar door or dining areas might be on a more level accessible area, so it’s always best to check with them direct if you have any specific needs or queries.

Sharing is caring

If you visit any, don’t forget to tag us on @southwest660 in your posts, we’d love to see your grape adventures and a share can mean the world to these independent venues too.

Did you know you can enjoy a sauna by the sea? Well it seems to be the new way of enjoying this ancient form of wellness and that’s at the beach, with warm wooden boltholes popping up along the South West 660.

Saunas are known to have cardiovascular benefits, help soothe muscle aches, flush out toxins and aid deeper sleep. The word ‘sauna’ is old Finnish and means “earth” or “snow pit.” Saunas use dry heat produced from a stove or hot rocks to increase the rooms temperature to between 70 and 90°C with very low humidity.

According to the British Sauna Society, nearly 50% of the 86 public or pop up saunas in the UK are based near a body of water (correct at Feb 2024).

There are over a dozen along the South West 660 with direct access to the ocean where you can hunker down, stay warm and enjoy a partial or full sea view, and combine it with a sea dip for highly effective hot and cold therapy.

Go solo and enjoy a communal sauna with like-minded folk, or book a private slot for you and a group of friends, with some seating as many as 12 people. Some have extra offerings – cold water baths, mud masks, salt scrubs, in addition to natures offering of sunrise, sunset and even full moon evenings too.

Here are all the Seaside Saunas that we’re aware of, along the 12 route sections of South West 660, all of which have private and communal sessions available.
