1 – Portland Bill

Just west of Weymouth is Portland Bill. With its distinctive and iconic red and white striped lighthouse on the end, rugged coastline scarred by centuries of mining of Portland stone, and exposed to the worst weather that the stormy English Channel can throw at it.

Best conditions: Sunrise, sunset, stormy conditions or dark starry nights

Best shots: The lighthouse or stormy seas around Pulpit Rock or the old boat winch.

2 – Around Abbotsbury

Abbotsbury is a scenic picture postcard village at the western end of Chesil Beach, and well worth a visit in its own right. It is also surrounded by beautiful Dorset countryside with a number of elevated viewpoints for photos of the Jurassic Coast and Chesil beach below. There are great views from St Catherine’s Chapel to the west of the village, and even better views from the ridge high above the north of the town (from where these photos were taken, looking east towards Chesil Beach and Portland).

Best conditions: Clear sunrises or sunsets when the landscape is lit by golden hour light

3 – Hive Beach (Burton Bradstock)

Hive Beach is a popular National Trust shingle beach near to Burton Bradstock, on a particularly scenic stretch of the Jurassic Coast. The iconic yellow sandstone cliffs between Hive Beach and West Bay provide great interest for photos. Although they are also very unstable so be careful when you are near them! Hive is great for winter sunsets when the sun sets over the sea to the west. This is when you can get both the golden cliffs and the setting sun in the same shot.

Best conditions: Clear winter sunsets.

Best shots: Waves, beach, sea, and golden cliffs make great subjects, especially when lit up by the setting sun!

4 – West Bay

At the western end of the golden cliffs seen at Hive Beach is the small harbour town of West Bay. Famous both for its golden limestone cliffs and as being the setting for the hit TV series, Broadchurch starring David Tenant and Olivia Coleman. West Bay is worth a visit in its own right, but also a great landscape photo location.

Best conditions: Winter sunrises and sunsets when the sun rises and sets out to sea, lighting up the golden cliffs.

Best shots:  Shots from the harbour east along the beach with the cliffs beyond. Or from the beach itself  to make more of those amazing cliffs (but be careful as they are very unstable!)

5 – Colmer’s Hill

We’re moving slightly inland for this next location. The iconic Colmer’s Hill, just inland from the main A35 between Bridport and Chideock. Easy to miss as you drive past, a trip to Colmer’s Hill is definitely worth it for fabulous views over the Dorset countryside and Jurassic coast beyond. Some of the best views can be seen from climbing up Quarry Hill to the west or Eype Down to the south.

 Best conditions: Winter mornings with fog in the valley

Best shots: Everyone wants the iconic shot of sunrise over the valley, which is filled with fog and just the top of Colmer’s Hill visible above it!

6 – Lyme Regis

Finally on our look at photo locations on route 2 is Lyme Regis. A fabulous town, with even a sandy beach (despite the sand being shipped in from elsewhere!). But it does get very busy in peak season, so the best time to visit with your camera is off season. The most iconic photo view has got to be the famous Cobb.

Best conditions: Winter sunrises when the sun rises over the sea, or stormy conditions for waves breaking over The Cobb.

Best shots: Either shots (from a distance) of waves breaking over the Cobb and the harbour, or shots taken from the sea wall with the sun rising beyond.

Surf in North Devon

This stretch of coast is officially world-class. In March 2022, North Devon was formally recognised as the 12th World Surfing Reserve, joining iconic locations such as Santa Cruz in California and Australia’s Gold Coast. A high density of outstanding surf and variety of waves for all abilities makes this part of the SW660 route a must-visit.

North Devon Surfing Reserve

Local surfer Adam Hall says it’s hard to beat – and he would know. Adam was involved with putting together the application for North Devon to become a World Surfing Reserve and now helps the community-led organisation protect local breaks and their surf ecosystems. So where does he surf?

‘In general terms, Saunton Sands (route 11) is a really good choice for nice, easy, mellow waves, if it’s not too windy. It’s a good start.

Croyde Beach is for experienced surfers (pic credit: N and M Photography)

‘Croyde (route 11) is for more experienced surfers who know what they’re doing. It’s a bit like ski runs, you’ve got you blacks, your blues, your greens. Croyde would aways be a black run. It’s good for more experienced or performance surfers because it’s generally bigger, faster and more powerful.

‘If it’s windy, you can go and hide away a bit at Putsborough (route 11). It’s a beautiful spot because you’ve got the Baggy Point headland which takes the sting out of the wind and swell.’

Adam says Woolacombe is well set-up. ‘It’s probably the biggest beach town in North Devon so there are loads of facilities.’ he says. ‘It’s a good all-rounder for beginners and intermediates.’

Croyde and Woolacombe are lifeguarded during the warmer season.

WHERE TO STAY

The Carlton Hotel in Ilfracombe is well-positioned to access all of that world-class surf. A friendly team and great food make this a year-round popular choice.

Surf in Cornwall

There are so many places to surf in Cornwall. That’s why surfer Martin Dorey moved to the county 30 years ago. The writer and environmental activist is the founder of The 2 Minute Foundation, a charity that encourages people to pick up beach litter. Martin has also written a series of books about travelling in his campervan. Martin reckons his home surf around Bude (route 10) takes some beating.

‘Bude is easy because it’s got two great beaches – Crookletsand Summerleze. Grab a coffee at Wild Spirits Wellness Café, run by a surfer and a yoga teacher. And the Electric Bakery is a really great place to get breakfast.

‘Back down the coast in Cornwall, you’ve got Newquay (route 9), of course, which is world famous. Watergate Bay is great for beginners, and then you’ve got Great Western and Fistral which are really popular. There are plenty of groovy cafes in and around town. Just around the corner from the Temple of Fringe Surf Shop is Kook, a juice bar run by a husband-and-wife team.

‘Going down the coast, you’ve got Perranporth (route 9), which is a huge beach with a great pub and live music bar, called The Watering Hole. They have loads of high-profile gigs there in the summer.’

Farther around is Whitsand Bay (route 6), which stretches from Rame Head to Portwrinkle. Be aware, however, that access to Whitsand is via steep cliff paths from the car parks at either end.

Martin Dorey’s latest book, Take the Slow Road: England and Wales, is about inspirational journeys around England and Wales by camper van and motorhome, including the South West 660.

WHERE TO STAY

Fistral Beach Hotel and Spa puts you right in the centre of the action. Between April and October, they offer two-night surf and stay packages, which includes a surf lesson.

Just a few sandy steps from Bude’s Crooklets Beach is Tommy Jacks. The tastefully done hotel rooms and apartments here are bright and spacious. Secure surfboard storage and a post-surf shower room are also available.

Surf in Dorset

Dorset might not have the deeply ingrained surf culture of Cornwall and North Devon, but it’s certainly making some waves, if you time it right. The county’s natural offshore reef means that the swell can form well. It’s a good place to dip your toe in if you’re a beginner.

Kimmeridge Bay (route 1) has consistent surf in the winter months and works best in offshore winds from the north. Note: the beach shares a border with a military firing range, so look out for the red flag.

Good times and good waves roll into Bowleaze Cove (route 1)when conditions are right.

Charmouth Beach (route 2) usually known for its fossil-rich cliffs and sandy shores, also attracts surfers throughout the year.

WHERE TO STAY

The Scott Arms is a pub with rooms and views over the Purbeck countryside. B&B accommodation includes double rooms. Breakfast includes locally sourced ingredients.

Lyme Regis is a good base for this stretch of coast. The Rock Point Inn is right by the town’s famous harbour. Settle into a stylish room overlooking the quayside.

TOP TIPS:

During the winter months, there are no lifeguards. This time of year is best left to the people who have surfed before and have the right kit for the cold water.

Scour the conditions. Check the local webcams before you figure out where you’re going to go.

Wearing a good-quality wetsuit is essential to keep warm and comfortable. Most surf schools provide them as part of their packages.

Understanding surf etiquette is crucial, especially in crowded lineups.

Beginners should follow basic rules, such as not dropping in on someone else’s wave and avoid collisions.

Understand rip currents – one of the biggest hazards for surfers and swimmers alike. If caught out, don’t panic. Swim parallel to the shore until you escape the current, then paddle back to safety.

• 21 November – 3 January: Head to the Heligan Night Garden and become immersed in an enchanting lantern experience, set amidst the atmospheric Lost Gardens. • 11 December to 4 January sees the return of the Mousehole Harbour Lights! The annual Christmas lights that adorn the village of Mousehole, Cornwall.  Started in 1963, the Mousehole Harbour Lights are switched on each December, illuminating the village and harbour. A tradition which started as far back as 1963!

Section 10: Padstow – Clovelly

• On Sunday 30 November, the Christmas Lights are a magical time in Clovelly.  Starting at 4 pm in the afternoon, a local brass band leads the procession down to the harbour, with festive Christmas carols sung along the way.

Section 11: Clovelly – Lynton

• 21 November – 30 December, RHS Glow at Rosemoor, Great Torrington, North Devon. Tall trees, windy paths and lakes make a great setting for illuminations and this year the RHS gardens are promising their longest ever trail with an extended route, dazzling new light features and festive music. Pre-booking essential.

Section 12: Lynton – Watchet

• All through December enjoy Christmas in the Lyn valley, with lights around the historic harbour of Lynmouth, and artisan shopping in the lovely local shops. Switching on ceremony is on Sunday December 1^st at 7pm.

Other highlights include the mid-July Wareham Carnival, the UK’s longest-running rural film festival (Purbeck Film Festival), and various markets throughout the year.

The Pig On The Beach – For Relaxed Luxury. (Route 1 Sandbanks to Weymouth)

Where do we start with the Pig On The Beach? Maybe outside – with its stunning views out to Old Harry Rocks and the Isle Of Wight. It’s beautiful walled kitchen garden, its own path down to the beach, the shepherds hut treatment rooms and even its very own herd of Dorset Horn Sheep. Step inside and you’ll find roaring log fires, a sea-view conservatory restaurant and walk-in monsoon showers. Along with a well-stocked larder in every room, full of locally sourced goodies.

• From 24 November – 4 January, check out Illuminate at Abbotsbury: an outdoor winter enchanted lights display within the Gardens. • 22 November – 4 January: Head to the Heligan Night Garden and become immersed in an enchanting lantern experience, set amidst the atmospheric Lost Gardens. Section 8: Penzance to St Ives

• 12 December to January 5 sees the return of the Mousehole Harbour Lights! The annual Christmas lights that adorn the village of Mousehole, Cornwall.  Started in 1963, the Mousehole Harbour Lights are switched on each December, illuminating the village and harbour. A tradition which started as far back as 1963!

Section 10: Padstow – Clovelly

• On Sunday December 8, the Christmas Lights are a magical time in Clovelly.  Starting at 4 pm in the afternoon, a local brass band leads the procession down to the harbour, with festive Christmas carols sung along the way.

Section 11: Clovelly – Lynton

• 15 November – 28 December, RHS Glow at Rosemoor, Great Torrington, North Devon. Tall trees, windy paths and lakes make a great setting for illuminations and this year the RHS gardens are promising their longest ever trail with an extended route, dazzling new light features and festive music. Pre-booking essential.

Section 12: Lynton – Watchet

• All through December enjoy Christmas in the Lyn valley, with lights around the historic harbour of Lynmouth, and artisan shopping in the lovely local shops. Switching on ceremony is on Sunday December 1^st at 7pm.

Founded in 1851, what has come to be known as St Austell Brewery originally began life as Walter Hicks Wine & Spirits. It wasn’t until 12 years later, Walter began brewing his own beer. The first of which was created in the Seven Stars Inn, St Austell. Since then, they’ve gone on to brew some of the nation’s most beloved pints and run an impressive pub estate alongside it for guests to quench their thirst with one of their award-winning beers.

The Mason’s Arms, Branscombe – Route 3

This picture-perfect thatched building has recently made the list in the Sunday Times 100 Best Places to Stay in the UK. A 14^th Century building, the pub has been lovingly refurbished to bring it into the modern day, yet still oozes with historical character and charm. With timber frames, low beamed ceilings, pine cladding, and whitewashed walls. Even a roaring log fire you’ll want to hide yourself away in its bosom. On brighter days, the glorious garden is a must visit!

Although not waterside, it is only a 10 minute walk to the 1-mile long Branscombe Beach. Here you can enjoy a stomp on the shingle and watch the tide roll in, or join the South West Coast Path.

Saunas are known to have cardiovascular benefits, help soothe muscle aches, flush out toxins and aid deeper sleep. The word ‘sauna’ is old Finnish and means “earth” or “snow pit.” Saunas use dry heat produced from a stove or hot rocks to increase the rooms temperature to between 70 and 90°C with very low humidity.

According to the British Sauna Society, nearly 50% of the 86 public or pop up saunas in the UK are based near a body of water (correct at Feb 2024).

There are over a dozen along the South West 660 with direct access to the ocean where you can hunker down, stay warm and enjoy a partial or full sea view, and combine it with a sea dip for highly effective hot and cold therapy.

Go solo and enjoy a communal sauna with like-minded folk, or book a private slot for you and a group of friends, with some seating as many as 12 people. Some have extra offerings – cold water baths, mud masks, salt scrubs, in addition to natures offering of sunrise, sunset and even full moon evenings too.

Studland Sauna Hut, Knowle Beach, Dorset

With two saunas available, a cosy shed-like version and a larger rectangular one, both with viewing windows towards the sea. Sunrise and moonrise can be enjoyed here and sunset turns the cliffs behind the sauna pink. Age 14+ allowed.

Seaside Sauna Haus, Seatown, West Dorset

Positioned on the seafront, this cedar wood ‘squircle’ sauna has a small viewing window, L-shaped seating and water buckets outside for a cool down if the sea isn’t your thing. You can enjoy both sunrise and sunset here depending on the time of year. Full moon saunas highly recommended. No communal sessions here, and children over 4 years old can take part.

Shoreline Sauna, Lyme Regis, West Dorset

A cutely coloured domed hut with porthole viewing window out onto the harbour wall and sea, with a lovely little outdoor area, that includes a roll top cold plunge bath and offers privacy yet still with views to the beach. They have a small changing area and offer communal and private and sessions plus full moon options available.

The Island Sauna, Portland

A barrel wood fired sauna with viewing window facing out to a beautiful ‘locals’ beach, right beside the historic Portland Castle with uninterrupted sea views where dolphins are often spotted. There is also a cider barrel for cold plunging and fresh water hose too. Why not join them for a communal sauna when the moon is full & the tide is high when super juices will be served too. plus monthly multi sensory sauna rituals. Children under 16 welcome in private sessions.

They plan to move around South-West Cornwall, and are currently in this position until May 2024. From mid-May they will be at Watergate Bay Cliffs, and July to September they’ll be at Sea View Tipis, Bedruthan Steps.

With a panoramic half-moon window, this ‘squircle’ wooden sauna is on Crooklets Beach and has cold water baths in addition to the sea on its doorstep. Enhance your visit with an add-on of sea salt body scrub or clay face mask. Sunset can be enjoyed here.

Route 11 (Clovelly to Lynton):

Saunas by the Sea, Baby Bay, Polzeath, Cornwall

Large rectangular sauna with big viewing window. Children over the age of 13 can join in, with under 16’s needing to be accompanied by an adult. Sunsets can be enjoyed here.

Sea Sauna, Saunton Sands, North Devon

‘Squircle’ wooden structure with floor to ceiling tinted privacy glass window, viewing out to the sea. Complimentary essential oils are included.
